Advance Commenced at Midnight.
French Journalists Mauled. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 12, 9.30 a.m.) PARIS, January 11. A message from Berlin states that telephonic communication with Essen has been suspended. It is supposed that the first French contingents have already occupied the Essen post office and railway station. The advance commenced at midnight, and the arrival of French troops on the Ruhr frontier was reported an hour later. It is reported that the German population remained calm and are awaiting the French occupation without apprehension. M. Poincare will speak in the Chamber of Deputies to-day, outlining the circumstances of the rupture with Britain. After the speech he will move the postponement of Socialist interpellations regarding the occupation of the Ruhr area, and will demand a vote of confidence.
