SCIENCE CONGRESS.

SERIOUS BUSINESS STARTS. (Per P*es3 Association.) WELLINGTON, January 12. The serious business of the Science Congress began this mo-rniug, when various sections met ior the purpose of hearing addresses from their respective presidents. Before the ethnological section, Captain Pitt Rives, F.R.A.1., read a most interesting paper entitled “ Some Problems in Mental Anthopology and the Problem of Civilisation,” the main purpose of which was to stress the importance ot endeavouring to ascertain and understand the native point of view in our Government of native peoples, particularly those in the Pacific. Before the biological section, Prolessor Chilton 1 discussed and demonstrated the latest methods of preserving minute Crustacea- Before the same * potion Professor R. R. D. Milligan r«ad a paper which embodied experiment* to determine the blood temperature of the TuataYa lizard the result of which showed that the tuatara was of very “ cold blood ” when comr.ared with the common irog. A live tuatara was used to illustrate points in the discourse. The Government Astronomer, Dr C. E Adams, outlined to the astronomical section the work accomplished during ol at Wallal in connection ’with the recent solar expedition. He did not comment oil the results of the observations, remarking that they would be ussumitated later. He commented very favourably on the preparations made by the Lick Observatory, and remarked that it would be interesting to learn with what success deflection had been avoided in photographing; the result. ~ Two papers by Professor A. D. Ross w ere read on shadow hands and the photographic measurement of the brightness of a total eclipse.
