The Magdalene Vinnen, on her arrival at Liverpool a fortnight ago. attracted a. considerable amount of attention, and Horne of her snore irftei/estmg features were described in an article which appeared iri our columns. No apology is needed for returning to the subject, for f>h" is. in her way. one of th-* mosti remnrkable ships afloat. There is only one other auxiliary of larger size, this being the Kobenhavik, constructed for flic East Asiatic Company at Leith. The Magdalene Vinnen was built by Krupps twelve months ago, and is owned by a Bremen Shipping Company. Messrs Vinnen ami Co. She lias now been in regular service since she was completed, and has apparently proved much more successful than the numerous auxiliaries constructed in the 1 nited States during the war, which have, for the most part, gained a very had name among shipowners and underwriters. The cargo-carrying capacity of the Magdalene Vinnen is no lees than 5200 tons, which is only slightly lower than that of the Kobenhavn. which lias a. deadweight of 5300 tons. She is 320 ft. in length, with a beam of 47.8 ft and a loaded draught of 24.6 ft. She is a four-masted schooner and haa a total sail area of 2360 metres. The machinery is of the Krupp fourcycle type, a fourlcylinder engine of 450 b.h.p. being installed. In most, large auxiliaries. an ordinary reversing system is adopted, either by rendering the engines directly reversible, or by the application of reversing gears. Tn the Magdalene Vinnen. however, a reversible propeller is fitted. which some shipbuilders consider more satisfactory for a vessel of this class. It is operated by means of compressed air supplied from an auxiliary compressor or from a compressor on the main engine supplying the injection air. The engine is of an entirely new type which is now being standardised by Krupps for powers up to 1000 h.p. The cylinders are cast in pairs, the. casting ’ including the top half of the crank case, a somewhat similar manner to the arrangement. adopted with many modern petrol engines on motor-cars. The whole engine, including the camshaft, and valve operating gear, is totally enclosed and is self-contained, with its three-stage air compressor driven off the end of the camshaft. The auxiliary machinery is electrically operated, and a separate oil-driven dynamo Is installed for the provision of the current. A novelty is introduced in the deck machinery by the adoption of 31-ton wjnehes driven by petrol motors. The sails, however, are hoisted by handoperated windlasses. It is worthy of note that several other large auxiliary nailing ships have been constructed in Germany, while some are 11 r»w on the stocks and will shortly be completed. j SHIPPING NOTES.
