The Christmas and New Year holiday season is very popular with raring and trotting clubs, and are few dis- ? t-ricts in the Dominion where the sportf£, ing section of the community is not f, within reasonable distance of a meet- ' ing. So far as Canterbury is roncernA ed 7 there arc no fixtures for the gallopers. but owners in these parts get over the difficulty each year by sending their horses abroad. All the indications point to the number of travellers being quite as large as usual this season. The 1 * Auckland Cup meeting can always be relied on to attract representatives from the leading Riccar- > ton stables and this year there will lie a very strong contingent from Canterbury racing at Ellerslie, probably consisting of about sixteen horses, drawn from half a dozen stables. They look a good lot. capable of getting a decent share of the hig stakes provided by the Auckland Racing Club. Another Riccarton trainer. R. W. King, contemplates a trip to Awapuni aiul Alarton, where there is more good money to he won. A big team can be relied on to go south, for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting. and some, at any rate, will continue the journey to Wyndham and Invercargill, where the sport

has been booming for a few years. An* , other contingent, of more modest class, »■ will do the West Coast circuit and doubtless the number booked for this trip will be large. Altogether, Riccarton is likely to be deserted during the holidays. Different conditions will rule so far as the trotting sport is • concerned. The Ashburton Trotting - Club will hold a meeting on Boxing Day. while the Canterbury Park Troti. ting Club will inaugurate its shift to i Addington with the usual two days’

fixture at New Year. With good stakes at both fixtures, local owners are well catered for at home. Many, however, will seek success in distant parts. The Auckland Trotting Chib’s meeting al-

ways attracts a contingent of Canterbury horses and it looks as if it would be larger than usual this year, so that, with many Australian visitors also on the scene, tkte Auckland fixture should be unusually successful. Other Canterbury trotting owners will do the West Coast meetings, while a few may go to Gore. With ali these meetings to • ehoose from, it should be easy enough ‘ to find suitable races for horses of all classes.

Nominations for the Ashburton k Trotting Club's meeting on Boxing 1 Day will close at five o’clock this even* l itlg Kj Nominations for the Canterbury K/~‘Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting Bp l ' to be held on the Metropolitan m: Grounds, Addington, on January 1 and r 2. will close at noon on Tuesday, Depr cember 12. H. Cutts is booked to leave for Auckland next Thursday, with four horses ; Winning Hit. Top Score and Wild Hind are certainties, while the • remaining box will be filled b> Angelo or Wbarfedale. J*\ D. Jones will probably ave three* horses for the Auckland trip. on which he will leave next Thursday. There is some doubt concerning Glentruin, but assuming she does not go, Mustard Pot will accompany Economy and Murihaupo It it probable that R J. Mason will have four horses under hia oare when he leaves for Auckland next week, drawn from Cupidon, Tressayr, Pluto, Yaspneei and Veil. T. H. Gillett will leave for Auckland on Saturday of next week. Foo Chow wiU, be the only representative ct fus stable on the trip north. F._ Scoullar will t»l« Rovai Star and Moorland to tbo Auckland meeting. expect, to leave on Katnndav of ?i«xt week.

W. Hobbs has made engagements for Palestrina and Wink at . the Auckland meeting and it is probable that they wll go north next week. Mr G. ’Gould, the owner of these two mares, is expected home from his English trip in a few days. Mr G. R. Starkey, who is at present on a visit to England, is expected back in the Dominion early in March.

Twtan Tatau, Fabrinade md Bonnie Lady are a trio oi Ricearton horses v.hn figure in the Palmerston North Stakes, apparently through oversight. It seems unlikely that Tatau Tatau wil! be sent north for this race, while the other pair are not even in work. The New Brighton Trotting Club’s course is now in capital order for the meeting to be held on Thursday and Saturday of next week. Tho race track has undergone a top dressing of ‘ about six hundred loads of manure and has been levelled oft. while with frequent cutting the grass should provide perfect going. There was a lot of stir at No'V Brighton this morning, as the grass track was open and a number of horses were worked. Most of them went the race track, but a few used the tj aining track. Nothing of a fast stature was done, but a lot of solid work was accomplished. The champion trotting mare Reta Rcrer has been mated with Author Diilon. Two additions to A> G. Wilson’s stable arc Golden Peter and Locanda Dillon. The New Brighton trainer !.-* getting together a more than useful tenra.. although the k>«« of Reta Peter who naturally was Wilson’s special favourite, is severely felt. Asturio is now being trained by H. F rost. W. Smith is busy with Wild Sunset and Royal Oak. Beth horses were given useful tasks this morning. Percv Dillon is the latest addition tc. J. Thorn’s stable. Petrova is not working at all wed at New Brighton. Onyx has rarely looked better. She is bowling along well in her work and is apparently quite sound. Rrownwood has recently joined J Armstrong’s stable. L. Davidson is working a good-loo’: - lng sort of trotter bv Nelson Birjgen from Tarantulus Child. He has not been long in work. Tt looks as though it will be some time before Hiram Galindo~is ready to rare, as be is verv much on the big side. Proud Elsie bears a well-trained anpearance and is pacing well in her work. The big pacer Auguste DiJlon doing a lot of his training work in harness, so he may in future be kept to sulky work. It will take H. Frost some time "«» get the Nelson Bingen—Country Belle gelding intd racing, condition. He is only a three-year-old and will probably not be seen at his best till be is five yen rs old. Prinzora is pacine: well in his work at New Brighton. under J. Armstrong’s charge. Irvar and Gleaming were associated in a useful work out at New B rl £hton this morning. The former looks sound and Gleaming moved more freely than usual, but he was very sore afterwards. King Dillon (in harness) and Elite (in saddle) were associated over a wokiv out of nearly a mile at New Brighton this morning. Both horses paced well. It should not be long before the pacer Partner is at bis best, as he is working well and has become very quiet. Sympathy is doing most of her work in saddle and she can pace along :il a good speed. She may race better this way than in harness. Peter the First is doing most of lli? work in harness, and is driven bv A. G. Wilson.

It would seem as though the English filly Dancing Doll is not as good as her looks would denote or her breed ing justify. [n each of her races since she arrived in Auckland Dancing Doll has faded away when it came to real business, and, as no excuse ran be urged for her on the grounds of want of condition, we are left to conclude that she is a fair moderate. I According to a letter received by Air i E. Lee Steere from J. Holt, F-urythiuic was believed to bo suffering from influenza on the last occasion he was ! beaten. He was very distressed when pulled up. and remained so for some ; time. The horse's throat also was iii i a bad wav. Holt says Eurythmic is j now rapidly improving, and if he does ' well in the autumn he will be sent to j Rand wick to meet Beauford and ; Gloaming. i The Forburv Park Trotting Club i could probably tighten the class attachj ed to the mile events on its programme ! with advantage. iv»fces “ Sentinel,” in the “ Otago Witness.” If good horses • are entered in a 2.20 class it means j standing them hack the best part of iOfi yards, and that is rather too much •' ground to make up through a field. A j closer class supplies a better race, and draws the better class of performer, that chiefly interests the public. At the recent Addington meeting the St. Albans Handicap, of 360 «ovs, ».17 class had 17 horaes a* Receptors; the ' Railway H&ndicao, of 300 sova, 2.16 ' class attracted 17 acceptors; and the Enfield Handicao, of 350 sovs. 2.15 class gathered 19 acceptors. The backmarkers in each race were only giving away 36 yards, so that the close running fields sunplied good racing spectacles. The For bury Park Trotting Club keen their principal events witron reasonable class of the big two mile races in Christchurch, but do not show the sam« progressive ideas in connection with the sorinfc races. Tt will be seen from the figures ouoted that if the club supplied good stakes and a smarter class it miss getting good fields for the mile events on the programme.

Glentruin was scratched fo r the Auckland Cup on Friday morning, soon after the weights appeared.

Tho Australian bred marc Marianne, by Kenilworth—RuenaJf’s Daughter, has foaled a grey colt to Tractor, a syn of The Tetrarch.

Insurrection is generally regarded ifi well treated in the Auckland Cup. He has proved that he can stay, and he is likely to be very dangerous at the end of the two-mile race.

Flora Macdonald, the dam of Royal Mac, has a colt foal by Absurd this season, and she has been mated with Lucullus.

A. Oliver has half a dozen horses in work at Awapuni, including »San tonio and Sanitngo, who showed useful form at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting last month.

Auckland reports state that Oak leigh. who won the Grand National Steeplechase this year, has been eaus ing his trainer some trouble, and he has been thrown out of trailing. Reports from "Wellington state that Mr T. Quinlivan’s team for the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting will consist of Gartmore. Royal Box. Scion and Roseworthy, and that tho quartet will race at Woodville before coming on to Kllerslie.

On all hands the New Ze{iland-i>red colt The Cypher is considered to oe the leading three year old racing in Australia this season. The veteran Marconi, the last of the stock of the famous Soult to race, vas saddled up for the Kawau Hurdles at the Takapuna meeting. The old gelding looked well, and though he jas toiling away in the rear, as usual, was finishing on well, and if his owner trainer can keep him on his feet there are more unlikely things than his further increasing his stake earnings.
