GAINING GROUND.
Liberal Cause in the South. Reform Seats Shaky. A private message received from a Dunedin business man this morning contained a good deal of interesting election news. There is a pronounced swing, he says, in favour of Liberalism, and the Massey Party supporters are growing more anxious every day. There looks to be a certain surprise coming in Oarnaru, where the Hon. E. P. Lee is being hotly challenged by Mr. J. A. Macpherson, Liberal-Labour. Mr. Macpherson’s campaign has been conducted with an enthusiasm that seems to spell defeat for the Reform Minister of Justice. Mr. Sidey (Liberal), says the writer, will win in Dunedin South, Mr. Statham (Independent Liberal), the Dunedin Central, and Mr. J. W. Munro (Labour), in Dunedin North. Mr. J. Edie, Liberal, will oust Mr. A. S. Malcolm, Reform, in Clutha. Mr. Adam Hamilton is not very likely to get back for Wallace, for which seat, Mr. J. C. Thomson, Independent Liberal, is a pronounced favourite. Close finishes are expected in Invercargill between Mr. Hainan (Liberal) and Mr. Armstead (Reform), and in Wakatipu, between Mr. Horn (Liberal), and Mr. Ritchie (Reform).
