They say that £250 has already “ been won,” and the money will be paid when the alleged wrong names on the roll “ have been verified.” So the prize has not ‘‘ already been won,” and wiil not be ontil the names are verified. the Prohibs. would like a little assistance in their search. If they want to detect and expose the people who stuff the rolls they should be interested in the following telegram, which was circulated throughout ISTew Zealand by the United PreSs Association: FEILD3MC, November 24. Alex. Hayward, a prohibition canvasser, was fined £5 for a breach of the Legislature Act covering enrolment. He per* suaded an elector to sign his wife's name to an enrolment form and then witnessed the signature. The elector was fined £l. GISBORNE, November 20. in the Magistrate's Court today Caroline Poole was charged with making a false statement, that she had resided twelve months in New Zealand. William Joseph Robinson, who witnessed the claim, was charged with assisting iit the commission of the offence. The Magistrate said the defendant had been warned by the canvasser for the Licensed Victuallers that she should not be on the roll. Then another canvasser for the Prohibition Party came along, and though aware that the doubt existed, she had allowed herself to be convinced and had signed the application. He could not treat the matter lightly. The defendant was fined £5.
