THE EDUCATION VOTE.
NOT TO BE REDUCED. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND December 2. In a speech last night the Hon C. J. Parr referred to a rumour that a reduction of £1,000,000 in the .expend; ture on education was contemplated. He said that there was no truth in the rumour. He had stated in the House, two months ago, rliat there would be no reduction which would imperil or prejudice the vital or essential factors of education. He had Air ALassev’s authority for that statement. Air Parr said that he had every reason to hop a that the present high figure would be maintained in » education expenditure Not the slightest thing had occur re 1 in Cabinet to warrant any other conclusion. Minor economies and readjustments might- well be necessary in the interests of education itself, but so far as he could look ahead, it was safe to say that no interference would be allowed with the main fabric of education. Referring to tlie third cut in salaries, the Minister said ’'hat it wag definitely provided for by the Act of last year. However, he ♦ns clearly of the opinion that there would be no third cut unless there was an appreciable drop in the cost of living by February, which would warrant such a reduction.
