OBITUARY. The death of Mr C A. C. Preston, j of Nay la rid Street, came as a great 1 shock to his many friends. The deceased gentleman, came to Sumner as a lad over thirty years ago. and, with the exception of a year or two at Foxton. =£jerct the whole of his life in the borough. Ho always took a deep interest in its affairs and though of a retiring disposition was at different times ;• member of the Forensic, Tennis and Sailing Clubs. He always actively associated with the- work ol the Anglican Church and for some time was a member of the Sumner Borough •Council. The late Mr Vrastern was held in the highest esteem hy all who knew. hi.in and his familiar, figure and kindly greeting will be missed throughout the borough. His only brother, the late Lieutenant F. Never before has Sumner been j stirred to such a pitch of enthusiasm j over life saving matters as at pre- J sent. The ladies of the borough have I combined to give the local club a great ' “ boost ” on opening day. December ! 16. A fine display of life saving is a-lso to be given by the united clubs, stalls and side shows will be erected about the pavilion, and arrangements are being made for at least one band to be in attendance during the afternoon. The club i> in need of prompt financial support and it is hoped that residents and visitors from the city will rally round and show their appreciation of the valuable work being done on our beach by the members of .the club. The invitation to attend the opening of the Life Saving Club was accepted, and it -was decided to bring one or two small matters under the- notice of the Tramway .Board. General sympathy \vn> expressed at the indisposition of Mr V. E. Hamilton, a.a active member of the- association. The society decided to adjourn till the cud of January. THE ELECTION. Dolling booths have been arranged for at the Redeliffs Library and at the Bury Street School. Sumner. At the latter provision is being made in the new building for a double booth. This will provide two fully equipped tables with two ballot boxes each and two sets of screens for the use of voters. It is hoped by this arrangement that the business of the dav may be man aged with less rush than formerly and that the large number of voting per mits and k ‘ declarations ” may be comfortably attended to. COMMUNITY ST A LLS. A community effort is to be made in the interests of the local Life Saving Club. This week Airs H. The club has been looking for this opportunity for som% time, and greatly appreciates this offer of the ladies who, once more, seem to have solved a knotty problem. MOTHE US’ UXION. The last meeting for this year was held in the Parish Room on Thursday afternoon. In the unavoidable absence of the vicar, Airs Powell read the Mothers’ Union Litany and presided. There was a largo attendance, including Airs H. Holland and members of the Sydenham branch, Mrs Dunnage aiul‘members of the Woolston branch, and Airs Fraer and members of the Philipstown branch- In welcoming the visitors Airs Powell said that she j hoped such meetings would promote j kindly feeling and fellowship and draw j all members closely together. Airs Russell's Glee Club gave a de j lightful musical programme, consisting I o* pianoforte solos, vocal solos, duets j and trios, all of which were very much | enjoyed. ! who herself was successful in qualifyj ing for the Performer’s Certificate. FLOWER SHOW. The ' Sumner-Bedcliffs Horticultural Show proved another great success. Tile variety of plants .shown and t-lic quality and. colouring of the blooms constituted ii record. The hall was a blaze of colour and residents had good reason to be proud of what the borough could produce. The hills as well as the Hats were well represented and the whole range of exhibits from green gooseberries to the choicest rose in the show exceeded the expectations of the most sanguine 'Fite Uoswill Cup for the “ Queen Hose ” was won by Mr T. F. Wlm.imid who was also successful in winning the "Black Cup for most points. Mrs \ I‘.. Hamilton, also of Sumner, was runner up lor this, and M r -1. D. Hd- ; murids of Redeiiffs won the Holme.- | Cup for eighteen distinct varieties. ; Tic president. Mr A. C. Wilson. of . Cashmere, asked the Mayor, the Hon J. • Barr.
