£IOOO Challenge LIQUOR TRADE EXPOSED and Routed on the Revenue Question Scathing Editorial Indictment “A mm ME” “A Crusade of Falsehood” Mr. Pobt. Millin-ar.. chairm°n of the Oamaru Board, has handed the ‘‘Oamaru Mail” a cheque for £IOOO to be handed to the Liquor Traffic if they can prove that they have been telling the truth about the N.Z. Liquor Revenue, The amount is still unclaimed, and the inference is obvious. ■j-i-o ‘‘ Oamaru iu.au,’ wxtu rcxresmng editorially in a leading article on 22nd November, m fellows: A OKtJSAQE or r.tLSBHOOO. Tho truth is unprofitable to the liqo©* license propagandists, and so in order to prop up their crumbling and falling cause they resort to the antithesis of truth. They conjure up some statement that is calculated to appeal to the imagination and turn people into the way of acting that suite their purpose. The allegation may be utterly devoid of truth, and may be exposed over and over again, but the coiners of false statements persist in its reiteration, in the belief that a great lie by oft-repeating, be accepted by some as an established fact. We have an instance of that reprehensible course of notion in the persistence with whieh the statement that if Prohibition is carried next month, the Dominion wiU lose £2,500,000 a year in revenue is flaunted in the faces of people in tho hope of frightening them into voting for the liquor traffic lest financial di*> ar.tor should befall the country. Now that statement of impending loss is * flagrant exaggeration of a daring character, which cannot be adequately described than as a, bold lie conceived and promulgated with the set purpose of deceiving simple-minded and unsuspecting people. These are strong terms to u»e, but the thing is so outrageously bad that it does not permit of mincing words and meally-mouthed denials. The thing has got to be given its true nama Those who have given currency to the lie have boon repeatedly challenged te prove that statement. With consum. mate impudence the promulgators of the lie have sought to lead people te believe that their statement is made on. the authority of Mr. Massey. We suppose it serves the ends and aim of the Liquor license advocates to get people to believe something foreign to the truth. THIS MODERATE LEAGUE make* a despicable appeal to yon to vote against Prohibition because otherwise you may have to pay some taxation which at present comes from the liquor consumed by ‘‘bushmen, rural workers, eto.” Everyone knows how shamelessly the Trade robs and debauches these poor fellows when they reach the nearest hotel with their hard-earned cheque. It is understandable that some members of the Moderate League are DISGUSTED at having their good names dragged in the mud in connection with such a contemptible appeal as this. Is it any wonder that some members of the Moderate League are ASHAMED of having their names connected with mendacious statements about Revenue and Taxation when they know that Mr. W. D. Hunt, Managing Director of Wright, Stephenson & Co., Ltd., and Chairman of the Government’s Taxation Committee, has published the following statements summarising an exhaustive analysis of the matter:— 1. The State will not lose Revenue by Prohibition. It will gain Revenue and reduce expenditure. 2. Prohibition will not cause unemployment. It will bring more employment. 3. There will be no loss during the change-over period. The improvement in State Revenue and in employment will begin at once. BE ON THE SIDS OF DECENCY. Onr womanhood and manhood, our growing g-irls and boys, the safety and sanctity of our homes, are the only things worth considering in this matter. YOU KNOW THIS. ACT UPON IT AND KEEP YOUR CONSCIENCE CLEAR by voting the Trade out. Strike out the TWO TOP Lines thus: — «w4 Control for fjational Prohibition
