THE LATE MR J. DOWN.

The death occurred this morning at las residence, Rosewaxne Street, of Mr John Down, who was at one time a very prominent figure in local politics. Mr Down, who was a Justice of the Peace, was a pioneer resident of Spreylon, and one of the best known men in ie district. Mr Down came to New ’Zealand about forty years ago, and

| had resided ever since in the Spreydon j district. For many years he was a 1 member of the Spreydon Road Board, | and later, when Spreydon became a ; borough, he was its first mayor. Mr i Down was a member of the Christchurch Drainage Board, on which his ; sei vice dates back for many years. For vary many years ho was a member of i (he committee of the Addington School. \ He took a keen interest iu educational j matters and was one of the active | workers for the welfare of the school. Mi Down was an active churchman, i and for many years had been a teacher :at the "Wesleyan Methodist Sunday 1 School. He was also a trustee of the ] church aud a circuit steward, and for : a number of years he was conductor jof the church choir. His last appearj ance in public was to open a garden i fete held in connection with the church ! a short while ago. Mr Down suffered | a severe accident a year ago. and j though he recovered sufficiently to api pear in public again some time afterward-. he never really got over the i effects. He is survived by his widow, tw-c sons, Messrs John L. Down and A. Neill Down, of Christchurch, and by 1 five daughters.
