A PROGRESS REPORT. ■ Assistance to returned soldiers under the j Repatriation Act will cease at the end j * of the year and the following progress ; report,- which is issued by the Director ; j of Repatriation, gives particulars of the j assistance given up to November 20:— EMPLOYMENT. j The Department has placed 26.567 die- j j charged soldiers in employment and there j I are at th© present time 113 names on the ; i " Employment- Wanted ” Register (Auck- 1 ; land 36; Wellington 54: Christchurch 13: j ! Tll addition to *1,438 students who have ' been assisted financially with grants for . the payment of fees and the purchase of I text-books, the Department has arranged j vocational training for 6,100 partially die- j a bled soldiers, apprentices, etc., and of J this number 5,923 have, completed their j courses and have been absorbed in vari- I bus industries. During the month of Nov- } ember *2 men commenced training and 26 trainees completed t.heir courses. There are 177 men still being trained, viz: 90 subsidised workers and apprentices in private workshops or factories: 39 trainees at Ruakura and Tauherenikau Training Farms, etc., and 48 others at Universities. etc. The total amount expended to date on the provision of facilities for training and for the sustenance of trainFIN ANCTAL ASSIST A NCE. Doans to assist discharged soldiers to j establish themselves in businesses or pro- j fessionß have been granted in 6.I'M cases at a cost of £1.152.924. A further 15.601 j men have received advances totalling | £744.583 for the purchase of household fur- J uiture or tools-of-trad© and 4610 have directions. Altogether no less than 62.647 inen have received assistance in other directions. Altogether no less than 62,647 men have received assistance from the Department to the extent of £2, 306.661. REPA YMENTS. Of the total amount of £2.306.81 expended on behalf of soldiers £1.897.505 represents loan advances for the establishment of businesses or for the purchase of household furniture, etc., and up to the 31st October last the Department had collected in respect thereof £1.144.728. Repayments. therefore, already amount to 60 per cent of the total loan advances.
