SALE OF WORK.

The ladies of the Puriri Street Pret* byterian Church (Riccarton) are making a. gallant effort to clear off the debt on the church buildings, • and yesterday for that purpose, they held a successful sale of work. The Church Hall was lined with stalls in endlefts variety, each on© decorated in a latticed design in royal blue and crimson. The stalls were all well filled, but perhaps the most attractive «f all was that with a. splendid display ol cakes of all kinds—plain, fruit, sponges, iced and ur.-iced. The ladies of the parish have reason to be proud of their cooking. One end of the hall

was taken up with two large and gaily decorated Christmas trees heavily laden with toys warranted to appeal to the hearts of the younger generation. Afternoon tea was served in, the Bible Class club rooms, where were arranged small tables, daintily decorated with crystal vases containing deep rose coloured sweet peas and maidenhair fern. Pale pink and blue were entertwined overhead, and these, with the white walls and flower decked tables, combined to make a charmingly restful effect in sharp contrast to the boisterous day outside. The ' tea was in the capable charge of Mesdames Hayward. Newth and Robinson, and Alisses Brocklehurst and Gardner. The sale was opened about 2.45 p.m. by the Rev G. Lindsay, who complimented the ladies on the splendid display of goods, as a result of their efforts during the past months, and said that in most parishes it was usually found that the ladies were the. most earnest workers. It -was hopecL as a result of the sale, that a considerable sum would be gathered to pay off the butiding fund debt, and that before long they would be entirely free from worry in this respect. They were the more to be congratulated for their | efforts because they unfortunately had jno minister to guide and encourage | them. However, Air Kilrov, an ex--1 tremely brilliant young preacher, who ■ for the past five or «ix months had been ! drawing large attendances at First j Church, Dunedin, would shortly arrive i> Christchurch. He would be inducted and ordained at the Puriri Street Church on December 12. The following is a list of the stalls: Plain and fancy sewing. Alesdames Vi 7 . Robinson and G. Askew; variety stall. Airs Beveridge; sweets stall, Airs Robinson; cake stall, Alesdames W. M’Crostie and Ferguson; flower stall, Airs Edginton; produce stall. Air L. "Wilson : ice-cream.
