LATE SHIPPING.

The Oygnet, was delayed on Wednesday at Nelson bv ba-d weather, and will not return to Lyttelton until this evening. The vessel leaves for Kaikoura on a special trip for a load of wool on Sunday at midnight, and returns here on Monday night., dischargee, and sails for Kaikoorn. Nelson and Motueka on Tuesday. The C. and D. Line steamer Port Inncoin sailed from New York on Tuesday afternoon with cargo for Auckland. "Wellington, Lyttelton. Dunedin, Melbourne ami Sydney. She is dne at Auckland about December 37. and at Wellington a week later. The Canadian Conqueror left Adelaide yesterday for Lyttelton, where she ia due on December 8. with a cargo of fruit. The Tainui arrived at Wellington on Wednesday morning from Napier to complete loading for Home. She is to sail from Wellington at. noon on December 5 for South ampton and London, via Montevideo and The Dorset, which sailed from Auckland on November 2, arrived at .Montevideo on November 26. and sailed the same day for London. The liner Durham sailed from Wellington at seven o'clock on Wednesday for T.ondon. Avonmouth. Manchester, Liverpool .ami Glasgow, via Montevideo. WIRELESS NOTICE. The day of the bigger ship is coming in Avmtralaeian waters. Recent announcements of shipping companies trading to Austral ia, in regard to the issuing of contractu for bigger ships for the Australian trade, shows that the financial man of the other side of the world recognises that, the present dullness of trade cannot go This call for bigger ships states the Sydney " Shipping List ” is going to have an Important effect on Australian harknows the boasts which are aired in regard to such harbours as Sydney or Hobarl. Soon these boasts will disappear, when it becomes necessary to spend enormous sums on deepening these harbours. Sydney Harbour has been pointed to with pride by every type of Australian. but the day is not, far distant when the Harbour Authorities will be looking at future expenditure with a.o unsteady eye. At present ships are trading to Australia which have but little to spare at of Australia. The port of. Hobart is the best, off in this respect, with 40 feet alongside the wharves; but Melbourne, Adelaide. Brisbane. Fremantle. Newcastle. Darwin and even .Sydney are not in too secure a position. With the advent of 30,000-ton ships on the Australian trade there will come serious trouble. There are ghipß on the Australian trade at the present moment which cannot enter many of Australia’s ports because of the lack of water, and ae the cities of these ports progress the trouble ia going to become more acute. In a year or two there will be a 22,000 ion ship on the Canadian-Australian run. but as this ship will only have to call at Sydney, the trouble of tbe smaller porta will be obviated. What tbe future will need in the way of harbour depth cannot be stated, and -t is certain that, Australia will soon have to set out on n policy of harbour deepening. T wenty-t housa u d-ton ships are now being built for the Australian trade, but when tbe time comes that, the 30,000 ton ships must enter Australian ports, then the harbour authorities will be up against it from a financial point of view. San Francisco is at present considering the deepening of the harbour entrance, and at present, the majority of ships trading to that port, are on small lines.
