THE PAPANUI AREA. r, POPULATION OF 3000. n With the inclusion of Papanui in the d City of Christchurch. in accordance with the decision of the poll of ratepayers taken yesterday on the ques- “ tiori. the population of the area under the control of the Christchurch City Council will be increased by about 3000 persons. The amalgamation of the district with tho city will take effect on March 31, 1923, and the residents of the new portion of the city will have a vote at the next City Council election. The area which ito be included comprises the greater portion of the Papanui rid- • ing and small portions of the Ha re wood and Wairarapa ridings. It. is 494: acres in extent, and there are -554 separate assessments in the area.. When tlm Commission set up by 1 tho Government to consider the quesf I tion of Papanui joining the city heard evidence in May last, it was stated by , counsel for Wnimairi County Council that the total number of houses in ' the area was 449. There were 126 houses with half an acre, 52 with under three-quarters of an acre, 26 with i under one acre, 41 with under two ■ acres, 33 with under three acres, seven ’ with under four acres, and 19 with over four acres. There were 322 electrica! consumers.
