I There Has been persistent and most widely displayed news in the American papers for the past fortnight in regard to the Ku ! Klux Klan, and it promises to hold public opinion. Mayor Hylan, of New York, has ordered the Police Commissioner to treat the Klan as he would bomb-throwers, and not to permit the organisation to undertake any activities in the city. Two prominent Divines, heads of noted Protestant Churches, ! have replied, defending the Klan, and announcing that the canvass j for members will progress despite all opposition, and that it will be extended to Canada and Britain. Governor Allen, of Kansas, has ordered the State District At- j torney to take State-wide legal action against the Klan, to withdraw j its charter and prosecute all members. Senator Walsh has appealed to President Harding to order j the disbandment of the Klan nationajly, citing the precedent of ' President Grant, who acted against a similarly named organisation j after the Civil War. The Klan has opened a meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, which is I being attended by delegates from all parts of the country. There are great surrounding discussions, but it is understood that the Klan is considering means to protect the organisation against ati tack. Popular feeling against the Klan is high.
