Sovne eighteen months ago an interesting carving, evidently the lintel of a. prehistoric building, with characteristics suggestive of Mongolian origin, was unearthed in the Awanui swamp, near Kaitaia, in the Ear North, and secured, as an exhibit for the Auckland Museum, states the “ Herald.” TJiere was widespread speculation as to the probable his.-ry of the specimen, and in the hope - l throwing light on the matter the museum authorities have since had a con idcrable amount of exploration carried out in the swamp in the hope of discovering further relics, that would elucidate the mystery.
