Unfortunately the day was anything but kind for the long-looked-for gala. It was very disheartening to all the boya who for many weeks had worked so bal'd in anticipation of a fine day. However, the fates were against them, but they bore it as a true Scout should. The sweets stall, in charge of Miss G. Brown and all her Scout Girls, soon disposed of the home-made sweets. The produce in charge of Mesdatnea fountain, Barber, Neville and Matthews did a goqd trade, as did also the cake stall iff charge of Mesdames Dean and Da we. The tea tent was under the management of Mesdames M’ Dowell and Bowman a.nd Misses Sherrard. Brown and Ogier, and many very willing helpers assisted to dispense the ever refreshing cup of tea. A dance was held on board at night and proved a huge success. The boat was decorated with } blue and gold streamers, and about eighty people tripped to the music supplied by a, good gramophone, one and all thoroughly enjoying the novelty. ACCIDENT TO A LAUNCH. On Saturday evening, at about 8 o’clock, tbe siren on the Cave Rock was sounded. Tbe lifeboat crew—consisting of G. Hines, E. Denham, H. I- Marriner, A. Hines, C. Timbell, R. Knox—put out and found a motor launch owned by Messrs Gordon and Wallace Burns, adrift on the Beacon Rock, it having broken its mooring at the pier. A strong ebb tide was running and the work of rescuing was hard and long, it being 2 a.m. before the launch was safely moored again. The lifeboat crew wish to express their thanks to the members of the Sumner Redcliffs Miniature Rifle Club, who stood by to give assistance. BEAUTIFUL SUMNER. Just now the hill residences of Clifton, Scarborough and Richmond are ablaze with beautiful flowers of every hue.. On a sunny day the localities are dazzling in pinks, orange and yellows, and one would go far before a finer display of colour could be seen. CROQUET. Wilson and family, of Nayland Street, Sumner, are staying at the Lodge, Hanmcr Springs, for a short holiday. Mr G. F. Allen, who for the past six weeks has been indisposed, is now Improving in health. He is at present staying at Hanmer House, and hopes shortly to take up his school duties again. Mr and Mrs Heaward, of Esplanade, have sold their property, and are leaving to take up their residence in A uekland. The friends of Mr C. Preston. Nayland Street, will regret to hear that he has undergone a serious operation. The many friends of the Rev Joughin will learn with pleasure that he is making a splendid recovery from his recent severe operation, and will shortly bo out </f hospital. Miss T\. Selby has been suffering from a bad attack of flue. Her many friends wish her a speedy recovery. Mrs Cox. of Euston Street, has returned from a delightful holiday spent i» • Dunedin. Mr and Mrs G. W. Smithson, of Esplanade, have returned from a holiday in Dunedin. EFFICIENCY LEAGUE. On Tuesday evening a lecture arranged by the Efficiency League will be given in the Town Hall, when tbe Mayor, tbe Hon J. Barr, will preside. The Rev R. T. G. Haddon will give an address on the “ Maori Race,” and will be assisted by Rev W. A. Pnpakura. who is a. first-class tenor soloist. MOTHER’S UNTON. Tbe monthly meeting of the Sumner branch of the Mothers’ Union was held in the Parish Room on Wednesday, when Mrs Powell prodded. A very instructive address was given bv Mrs Watkins, the subject being home nursing, with special consideration giver, to children’s complaints. For some time past the building trade in Sumner has been very brisk and quite a. number of houses have been built or are in course of erection Monck’s Spur, in Redcliffs, is be coming increasingly popular as a residential area, and at gj«?sent four additional houses are being erected. Three new shops aro in course of construction, one m Monck’s Bay and two on the Main Road. Red cliff*. These will add very greatly t© the business aspect of Redcliffs. BAND OF HOPE. The last of the Band of Hope concerts fof the year was given iu the Town Hall last week, when there was a good attendance of parents and friends. The hall w r as decorated with red streamers and Japanese lanterns and greenery, and the »tage was decorated with cherry blossoms. The children were trained by Miss Eldred, Mesdames Mogridge, Alexander ana Heslop.
