BOXING.
NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. A meeting of the New Zealand Boxing Council was held on Wednesday, Mr A. R Kirk presiding. In connection with the M’Cleary-M'Quar-rie case, correspondence was received from M Cleary stating that he consented to the case being reopened, and from the Otago association that it was opposed to a rehearing, even if the two contestants agreed. No reply was received from M’Quarrie. It was decided to give M’Quarrie until Noyember 8 to state his views, and to inform the Otago association that the council was unable to understand its attitude, seeing that it was at the request of the association that the council agreed to reopen the case. The Otago association wrote asking- for permission to promote a contest between Whittaker and M’Quarrie for the heavyweight championship. It was decided that permission could not be granted, as under the decision of the council on August 18 M’Cleary was still holder of the title and further, that until the M’Cleary-M’Quarrie ca*e was definitely settled it was not the intention of the council to sanction a contest for the title. Tbe chairman drew attention to a Press telegram dealing with a competition promoted bv the Marlborough association. Tho report stated, in connection with one of the events, that “the Marlborough Boxing Association declared all bets off.” Tt was decided to communicate with the association on the snbiect. The Timaru a-ssooiat.ion wrote asking if the council was in a Position to sav if its application for permission to promote a contest for the heavy-weight, championship could he granted. It was decided that the association should he riven net-mission to promote the event, immediately the conned had given a final decision in connection with M’Clearv’s anneal.'
