Osborne, of Wan j ganui. arirved this morning and are at the White Hart Hotel. Miss Gladys Russell. Stanmore Road, returns to-morrow from six weeks spent in Wellington. Miss Gladys Diamond, Murray Place, leaves to-night for a holiday in Auckland and Rotorua. Miss Winifred Finmore arrives from Dunedin next week, and will be tin' guest of Miss Dorothy English. Their Excellencies intend being present at the Polo Club ball to l»e held in the Art Gallery on Tuesday, November To-morrow evening, at the Canterburv Women’s Club, Mrs H. Holland and" Miss Grand will he hostesses at a dramatic evening for members. At the Jellicoe Hall last evening a dance was held in aid ot Airs F M Orchard’s .stall at the Christmas market. Claridg* A feature of the delightful revue, “ A La Carte.” at present showing at the Choral Hall in aid of the Bridge ol Remembrance, is the gorgeous ares-t ing. both the colour schemes and th© designs being charming throughout th* many scenes. The Ragtime Nine, who open the show, wear quaint jazz, cos tumes of pink silk with cerise ribbons tom ing from the waist line to a hoop and caught in again at the ankles—** vo "V pretty effect. The. Indian scene is full of harmonious colour, deep henna and emerald shades predominafc- ! ing, relieved by gold with a note *»f vivid purple and heliotrope. The frock-* worn in “Springtime” are charming These are carired out in shades of paid ■ pink, blue and heliotrope, with apr>»* ‘ green hats. Each frock is adorned with circlets of tiny flowers. Scarlet 1* the predominating colour in the Venetian scene—very effective against n blue background. In this scene Airs C. G. Sommers wears a beautiful frock of f>ink aud silver taffetas, with panniers apd opalescent ornament with long strings of heads in front adding a rich note. A black net cloak with » silver ruffle is worn with this frock Lulu ITannay wears a truly magnificent Eastern costume with wing-lik© draperies of jewelled net and headgear of black plumes, the colours corre with those worn by the ballet —mainly orange and coral. The pierTot suits are another charming set earned out in pale lemon and heno trope, while the Spanish scene is brilliant with nurple skirts and shawls of emerald and flame, fringed with black. Pei'iaos the most striking set is that the Snanish dancers. It is carried out in black am white. The skirts are full and flounced with black-edged flounces and white shawls are beavilv fringed with black, a picturesque an I iharacteristic no.e being added by th<» dark lace mantillas worn over the ligh Spanish combs. Miss Doreen Suton looks charming in her Hawaiian costume, as does the supporting ballet and the shepherdess costumes with thrir pretty panier effect in pale blue and floral satin are extremely dainty The cocktail ballet is handsomely dressed in various shodes of shimmering tissue of gold and silver. Airs Inglis has returned to Timaru. from a short visit to Dunedin. Air and Mrs Maurice Harper. Lake Heron, are at The Levels, with Airs C N. Orbell. While in Timaru this week with the Williamson Company, Miss Rosemary Rees was the guest of Airs Westmacott, Nile Street. Arrivals in Timaru yesterdav to the Hydro were Mr and Airs E. C. Stud holme. Waimate. Mrs Fenwick and D.' and Mrs Williams, Dunedin. Airs J. Al'Mullan and children have returned home to Good Street, Rangiora, after spending a holiday with Airs Alorrison, of Darfield. Mrs H. Al’Kenzie Smith who has been for some months in Timaru. left on Wednesday on a vieit to her son in North Canterbury Mr and Aire Erling Zeisler, Timaru, are spending u hebdav in Waimate. Yesterday afternoon at the Technical College Aliss Beck demonstrated a most attractive menu for invalids, in connection with Health Week now iu progress in Christchurch. Those present benefited greatly by the skill with which Miss Beck prepared her recipes. The following dishes were served : Brain 1 soup, stewed sweetbreads, quenelles of fish, apple meringue, sa.voury custard, ; lemon sponge and chicken creams. The Aramii Schoolroom was packed on Wednesday evening, when the Alarm Football Club held their social and j dance. Air C. H. Aston carried out j the duties of AI.C., and the music ' was supplied by Air ad Alls F. Innes. A competition was won by Air J. Brooke-Taylor, Airs V. Nnnkivell being runner-up. Items were given by Alisses E. Euston, W. Ozanne, G. Nan- I kivell, I. Petrie and AI. Aitken. Messrs Crocker and Allen. After supper had been served dancing was continued until a late hour. In connection with the Home Economics Association last evening Miss J. Beck, of the Technical College, gave a demonstration of sweeta-making in the Assembly Hall of the College. Keen interest in the lecture was evidenced by th© very large number of members and friends present-. At the rear of the hall a table was daintily set out laden with man}' kinds of sweets, among which were nougat French, fondants, liquers. sw<eet(meate, moche walnuts, walnut) fudge, marzipan, marzipan almonds, marshmallows, chocolate creams, coffee iondant and Turkisli delight. Five silver vases filled with flowers in the form of sweets added to the attractiveness of the table. A very hearty vote of thanks was passed to Aliss Beck for her interesting demonstration. The Toy Dog and Cat Club gave their annual ball in the Art Gallery last evening when there was a large attendance. The main hall looked effective with streamers of yellow and blue, and yellow and blue balloons hanging from the ceiling. The committee were: Airs Bosworth, Mrs Bell. Mrs Flockhart, Mrs Scott, Mrs Baldoch, Mrs Gudsell, Air Lohrey, Mr Robinson, Mr Wilkinson and Mr Chisholm. For the non-dancers progressive euchre was played. Amongst those present were Mrs Bruges, Airs Lohrey, Mrs Chis- ; holm, Misses Robinson. Misses Raymond, Air Bickerton, and Airs Bickerton. Miss Bosworth, Aliss Fordham, Miss Rudd, Mrs Jackson, Aliss Beck, Miss Hunter, Mrs Nightingale. Mrs Bradley, Air Barrel, Air Alartin, Air Jackson, Air Blogg. Mr Turner, Air i Fisher and Air Burnside.
