BURWOOD NOTES.

(Special to the *‘Bl3l’.") At the last meeting of the YYalmairi County Council a deputation from the Burwood Progressive Associi ation waited on the council relative to improvements in the district. The first matter that came under review was tho river bank improvement. The deputation asked the council if financial assistance could be given so that a. start Could be made with the work. It was pointed out that the council had sold the trees off tho river side and the stumps were disfiguring the vicinity. ; The council was asked if it would spen 1 j the money received from the sale or the | trees on the river bank. The chairman of the council stated ; that it was a stress on the finances of the council to grant any money at the present time, although the work contemplated would, be a benefit, to tho district. It was decided to grant the ; sum of five pounds towards improving the banks by removing the willow’ I stumps. Another matter that the de- : putation brought before the council ! was the Christchurch City Council rub ! bisli dump at Buxton’s. It is said that a stencil arises* from this dump an 1 | that dead horses have been buried close to the surface. Now, this is in do :- proximity to the tram line and it v: quite time that the council drew the ■ line suid buried their city debris hi some other locality. This happens, 10 i doubt, to be handy and convenient for .the city to make use of. but the residents certainly object. The Waimairi County Council have made representations to tho Public Health Department ; on the matter/ Tll reference to th<> vesting of the ! foreshore of the Styx riding in the ■ county inquiries are now being made i into the matter. It i.-, a wonder tho council did not take this matter up some time ago. It was recently brought j- under the council’s notice by the Pro- | gressive Association. The school concert. given by the Black and Gold Concert Party, was i great success. The items were much j appreciated by the audience. The con- ‘ eort party will give another concert in the hall 011 October 25. when a com- , plete change of programme will be given. Much sympathy has been extended in the district to Mr AY. Hampton and family on the loss of his wife, who passed away on Saturday evening. The funeral took place at Burwood yesterday. Many beautiful wreaths were sent, amongst them being two from the school. A few building sections have been sold during the last week or so in tho Burwood and Shirley districts. Tt is the intention of the purchasers to erect homes for themselves. Mr Liggins is to be congratulated j on the fine show of fowls he has at hi* farm in Queensbury Street. Quite a large number of people have been constantly shown over the establishment by Mr Liggins. ft is to be regretted that River Road towards Racecourse Road is still unliglited. As this i.s such a busv ! thoroughfare the council should instai some street lights now* that the current is on this route. 1 was wondering if in order to raise funds for- the river bank improvement, or other necessary work in tho district, a sports gathering could he arranged. No doubt it would be a success, and would he well attended by Christ- , church citizens as well as by the resij dents of the surrounding districts. 1 T understand that the Tramway Board will he acquiring the land under , the Public "Works Act for the new tram cut at Buxton’s. | Burwood Hall. Sale of Work and j Produce, Saturday Next, at 2 p.m.
