THE TEA KIOSK FIRE.
The destruction of the tea kiosk in the Botanical Gardens was an unfortunate affair. It is possible that the fire was the work of incendiaries, though why public property should be attacked in that way we do not know. If the fire was deliberately caused it must have been inspired by a desire to wreak purely wanton mischief. This incident, joined to others, has created an uneasy feeling, because public property depends almost entirely for its safety on the existence of a healthy public spirit. We do not refer to the subject; however, in order to discuss the mystery of the fire. The building will be replaced and we hope that the Domains Board will give the new design some careful consideration. The old building was in some respects uusuited for the purpose for which it was used. It was too open and exposed, and on chilly afternoons was not so pleasant a rendezvous as it should have been. A design which combines j beauty with comfort will no doubt be sought for when the new building is being considered.
