Claridge, Wellington, was married to Mr Joseph Scales, youngest son of Mrs Scales and tl>e late Mr William Scales, of Townsville, Queensland. Mr and Mrs F. R. Dunsford, who for the past two years have been living .'n Sydney, have been staying with Mrs H. English, Westminster Street. They leave for the north to-night, Mr Dunsford having been transferred to the Wellington branch of the Bank of New Zealand. On Saturday, September 16, an enjoyable evening in the form of a pantry evening was spent at the resident of Mr and Mrs W. F. Saunders, 16. Walsall Street. Riccarton, in honour of Miss V. Muschamp, who is shortly to be married. During the evening songs, violin and piano solos and competitions were indulged in by the many friends present, and a dainty-

supper was served. Mrs C. L. Young, of the staff of the Girls’ High School, recently gave a lecture to the Canterbury Women r dilates’ Association. Her subject . is “ Oxford.” where she herself gradated. Mrs Young recounted her im-’-essions as a “ fresher,” incidents of rarest in her life at Lady Margaret ail, her college, and showed the great I'i.rence between University life in w Zealand and Oxford. A hearty •t-e of thanks was accorded Mrs *ung at the conclusion of her lecture. The sales were good at the cake tall in the porch of Everybody’s Theitre on Saturday morning. Mrs Tayior, Mrs Furze and Miss Candy wore the stall holders. As was stated at the annual meeting of the Waipounimu Association in the afternoon the results of the stalls had been very satisfactory, and it was hoped by this means to clear off by the end of -the year the deficit on the maintenance account in connection with the Maori Girls’ College. Mrs Beauchamp Lane will be in charge* next Saturday. The Foresters held their thirtyfourth annual .ball in the Dunsa-ndel Town Hall on Friday, there being a large attendance. The hall was decor *ted with numerous emblems, and -photographs of the Order. Bro. G. feheat, senr., delivered a speech appropriate

to the occasion. There were about torty couples present, including visiters from the Druids Lodge (Doyleston), Hibernian Lodge (Leeston) and the Foresters’ Lodge (Greendale). Bro. i' . Rapley carried out the duties of M.C. in a capable manner, and Bro. T. Noble assisted with the Caledonians Misses R. Lill, M. Rill, C. Clinton, R. Stewart, Bros. Rill and Burgess supplied the music for the dancing. The Grand March was lod by the Senior Woodward (Bro. G. McDonald) and Mrs McDonald. A very successful children’s plain fijid fancy dress daaice, in aid ot St .John’s Anglican Church building fund, v, as held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Rangiora, on Thursday evening last, when about ouo hundred and fifty children, as well as numerous spectators, were present. Owing to the unpleasantly crowdod state of the nail for dancing, it was unanimously decided to repeat the programme in the Drill Hall towards the tnd of October. Prizes were given by . lossr.-. R. Hill and A. J. Thompson, Mesdames R. Kinley, W. Butters, Maw son and Miss Lace, and were awarded by popular vote to the following: Girls, Ron a Smith (Bride) and Amy Prestney (Grandma- 1 ), Ist equal; Myrtle Comyns (Vegetables) second. Boys: Geo. Taylor (Swagger) first, Harry Feroti (Parson) second ; Alan Smith (Bridegroom) third. At Hororata a very enjoyable kitchen afternoon Was given in the Town Hall to Mi.se ESsie Codings, who is to be married shortly. About forty friends were preseut. Musical items were given and competitions were held. After a very dainty afternoon tea had ceen served, Archdeacon Ensor, on behalf of all present, wished Miss ColImge every success in her future life, to which she suitably responded. Miss O’Meeghan has returned to Timaru from Christchurch. Miss Odie Kerr, who was with Mrs Armstrong, Chalmers Street. Timaru, returned to Christchurch on Thursday. Mrs Scobie Mackenzie. Wellington, and Mrs John Brook. Nelson, are the guests of Mrs W. Elmslie, Wia-itl Road, Ti m am. Lady Rodwell. who has been spending a short holiday in Timaru, left for the north on Saturday, en route to Fiji. Mise Elaine Newton, daughter of Mr and Mrs I. E. Newton, formerly of Christchurch, has passed the R.T.C.R musical examination at Napier, Miss Newton is sixteen ;?ea;m of age and is a pupil of Madame Lchrnann (nee Miss Beatrice Vartha). Concerts were given during the week in the Public Hospital in Wards 10, 7 and 4. They were organised by Mrs 1. O. Holmes and the performers

A pleasant evening was spent on Thursday in the Orange Hall when the Perseverance Division of the Sons and Daughters of Temperance held the final

of their series of socials. There was a good attendance of members and friends presided over by Bro G. G. XX'oodliam. A programme of musical and elocutionary items formed the first part of the entertainment, those contributing being:—Recitations, Misses J. Manhire, K. Brewins, and F. Brewins; songs, Miss Down and Messrs XX 7 ykes, Walsh, Harris and Clothier; quartettes by Addington Party and Richmond Male Voice Party. Mr Woodward gave comic songs to banjo accompaniment. The accompaniments were ably played by Mias M. Johns and Mr A. Bell. Supper was served by members of the committee, assisted by Mesidames Claridge and Clothier, senr. Dancing was curried on till 11.30, to music supplied by Mr L. Salkeld and Miss Johns who both earned rounds of applause for their splendid music. The duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Bro Triggs. The committee responsible for the success of the series were Bro XX 7 . Crawley (chairman). Sisters L. Claridge, E.
