The Coni in cm weal tli has received two offers for the purchase of Cockatoo Dock. A syndicate of engineers has offered £1.000.000. Mr A. Green, a member of tiih House of Commons, who is at present in Sydney, has been instructed by an English hteel firm to endeavour to acquire the dockyard. The Government has announced that it is not for sale. A cable from Melbourne on September 21 stated that in the House of Representatives Mr Hughes denied there was any truth in fhe statement that negotiations were proceeding with a private syndicate for the disposal of Cockatoo Island dockyard. A cable iiom Sydney on Saturday stated the balance-sheet for Cockatoo Island for the twelve months showed a profit of £320. The management regarded the small profit as particularly com-
mendable considering that the period was the worst experienced in ship-re-pairing and docking.
