MR MASSEY'S STATEMENT. NOT A SCAREMONCER. (Special to the u Star.”) WELLINGTON September 22. Mr Maesey told the House to-day that he was giving the gist of information he had received regarding the Near East situation in saying that he regretted the position was not so reassuring as it wa« on Thursday. “ We are not out of danger of possibility of war. We really will not be out of danger for a we.ek or ten days.’’ Everything, he added, depended on Kemal and his associates. Tf they agreed to the conference which hud been suggested by Britain and its Allies, and agreed to refrain from encroachment on territory reserved under tlie Treaty of Sevres all would be well, but at present he would not lie justi fied in leading the House or country to believe that we wore out of the trouble. Mr Howard: Are the cables to be relied on? Are thev wrong? Mr Massey : 1 don’t say that. Probably the effect of what T am saying mar appear in the evening papers. Labour members : All a scare. Mr Massey: I am not a scare monge: in a-ny sense nf the word. The situation is still anxious. Answering a former inquiry regarding provision for the safety of New Zealanders in Constantinople and Gallipoli, the Prime Minister reatj a cable from the Imperial authorities stating that the British naval and military authorities may be relied on to make adequate arrangements for the safety of^ the British community, but evaeuafibn. bad not considered desirable. This inquiry from New Zealand had been referred to the High Commissionei for Britain in Constantinople, and be expected to have further information as a result.
