UNEMPLOYED AND RACING
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —After the Wellington Racing Club has already made a donation to unemployment funds, it is painfully surprising to find that the Canterbury Jockey Club refuses to agree to anything of the kind. It considers that it has done more than its share in providing work through the rebuilding of its grandstand. Well, there is a widow woman in Christchurch who gives five shillings a week regularly to the unemployment fund. She could easily say that, by purchasing her groceries at a certain store, she helps keep the man behind the counter in work. But she does not. Only the rich, powerful and aristocratic Canterbury Jockey Club says that.—l am, etc. WIDE AWAKE.
