KAIAPOI HARBOUR.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—l notice that at yesterday’s meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board Mr R. Macartney criticised the proposal to make a harbour at Kaiapoi. He thinks that the money spent on improving the Waimakariri will be absolutely wasted. Now, I believe Mr Macatrney" is not a qualified engineer, so I do not see how lie can make such an assertion when qualified engineers have reported that the building of a training wall at the mouth of the Waimakariri wil make the river easily navigable for fair-sized steamers. The Waimakariri is one of the few rivers in New Zealand that is suitable for navigation, and the only pity is that lor year© this asset has been wasted. There is no doubt that as the population of Christchurch and Canterbury increases Lyttelton Harbour will prove too small and, therefore, the establishment of a harbour at Kaiapoi as a subsidiary port to Lyttelton should prove a payable proposition.—l am, etc., KAIAPOI RESIDENT.
