The Magistrate : Why have you not paid some money towards the maintenance of your child?— Well, times have been hard, and 1 could not get much. What are you working at?- T do a bit of travelling on commission, but I would take any work 1 could get. The Magistrate (to the Probation Officer) : Can this man do manual work? He can do it, but I wouldn’t give him half a crown a day for it. Accused : Don’t judge until you see me at work. The Magistrate : What this man wants is .steady work, and I’m going to put him where he can get it. Ho will rise early in the morning and go to bed tired at night.
