FIRING ON THE POLICE.
FIVE YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT. (Pxr Press "Association.) WANGANUI, August 22At the Supreme Court to-day, Joe Kauriri, a sturdily-built 3laori. was charged with escaping from custody and with discharging a rifle at the police who endeavoured to arrest him. Kauriri was the central figure in a recent exploit near Raetihi. When surrounded by three constables he opened fire with a rifle. The police took shelter behind logs and replied with revolver shots. Kauijiri was wounded and escaped, but gave himself up next day. The chief witnesses were the four , who ytook part in tl I?episode. One stated that he believed that Kauriri could have shot him. but the 3laori did not on that occasion fire, i Kauriri gave evidence, and said that he did not want to shoot the police, but merely to frighten them so that he could escape. Accused was found guilty. 3lr Justice Reed said that accused : had a bad record. He was sentenced ; to five years’ imprisonment and declared an habitual criminal-
