August 18. Tn the doubles the Australians defeated the Spaniards. 6-3, £-3, 6-3. In the first set Patterson’s service was fast, and untouchable. The second set served still further to show that The Australians were the hotter doubles players, though Alonzo wae unrivalled for covering the court. De Goraav was distinctly the weakest of the four. Patterson’s service was too much for his opponents. In the last set the .Spaniards made a little better showing, winning t.he first, s-ame and then the fourth and fifth in succession. Fatterson hit everything hard and the ball sometimes could hardly he seen for speed. The Spaniards also secured the seventh game, but that was the end of their sticcess. In the last game Patterson made two double faults, permitting his opponents to work up to deuce. He then served two aces, taking the match. Tn the Davis Cup preliminary tie against Spain. Australia has now won two matches and Spain one. Patterson defeated De Gomar, 6-3, 8-6, 6-4. Alonso defeated O'Hara Wood, 2-6, 8-6, 6-2, 8-6, 6-1.
