(Special to the “ Star.”) TTMARU, July 10. On April 16 Malcolm Smith drew from his employer the money which was owing to him and £2 extra, and went into Fairlie to buy a bicycle. It was the day of the Fairlie Show, and Smith, having met a number of friends and had a number of drinks, forgot all about bicycles and his obligations to his employer. He hired a taxi and had a big trip round the district, finishing up in Tiinaru. As a result he appeared in the Magistrate's Court this mornmg, before Mr E. R. Mosley; S.M., charged with obtaining £2 from Robert Tngram Gillingham, at Fairlie, by false pretences, and also with obtaining the hiro of a motor car from Henin- Saunders by false pretenejos, the amount of the hire being £7. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges. On the first charge he was convicted and ordered to refund £2 to Air Gillingham, and to pay 17s lid costs, be to pay back the money in monthly instalments, and on the second he was placed *on probation Tor a period of twelve months, on condition that he took n prohibition ordor out against himself and refunded the sum of £7 to the taxi-driver.
