EVENTS OF THE WEEK. (Special to the Star.”) AT A* SAINTS' CHURCH. The Ladies* Social Committee organised a very successful bazaar this week at the Parish Hall. The stalls were tastefully arranged, and good business was transacted. During the afternoon a splendid, programme of music was j contributed by Mrs Re ay, Mrs Buxton, j Mrs Douglas Smith, Mrs A. C. Fryer j end Miss May Barber. The vicar, the j Rev E. C. W. Powell, presided. - PERSONAL. Te Rev W. M’Ara is spending a short holiday -with his daughter, Mrs W. Sherrard, at Spreydon. His recent indisposition is the first that has interfered with his church work for nearly fifty years. Mr and Mrs W. E. Tt was decided that the members of the team that won the Benson Shield should be entertained at a da no©, a sub-committee consisting of Messrs Glaekin, Brown and AfacDonald being appointed to make arrangements for August 9. RIFLE CLUBS. The members of the S unmerited cliffs Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club were entertained during the week at a very pleasant evening by Mrs E. R. Bartley of Redcliffs. Mrs Bartley is one of the original members of the club and with Mr Bartley received the thanks of the members in musical honours at the end of the evening. The local team is preparing to meet, tho New Brighton ladies’ team next week in the inter-borough contest. The Sumner Senior Cadets are lioping to arrange a match with the New Brighton Cadets, and Lieutenant it. M. Murray is interesting himself in the matter. POSTAL MATTERS. At its last meeting the members of the Burgesses’ Association had under ! consideration the postal service in the 1 borough. While the present work of the office was spoken of in congratulatory terms, regret was expressed that the cut in the evening service had been necessary. It was thought that probably the residents did not put as much business through the local office as they might and it was decided that full inquiries should be made into the conditions governing the service, so that an attempt might be made to raise the status of the office if circumstances were at all favourable. VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE. I The Sumner Fire Brigade's annual social was a record success. Over three hundred were present and a delightful evening was spent. The committee are to be congratulated upon the results of their efforts, particularly upon the effective scheme of decoration used in the Town Hall. A meeting of members is being called at an early date. REDCLIFFS HALL. The members of tho Redcliffs School Hall Fund are to Ido congratulated upen the excellent concert they arranged in the interests of their cause. The Town Hall was packed and the programme much appreciated. Mrs H. T. Neilson worked very hard to make the function a success. REDCLIFFS BURGESSES’ ASSOCIATION. Mr F. T. E-ldridge presided over a special meeting of the societj' on Wednesday evening, when arrangements wore made to plant a strip in front of the rifle range. Mr J. Arrangements were made to engage the unemployed for the work, Air Tippett being appointed to act until the Borough Engineer in its supervision. REDCLIFFS PROGRESS. Air A. W. Cooper, of Hawera, has purchased the carrying business recently owned by Mr G. E. Billson, of Redcliffs. Air Cooper intends making a daily trip to and from town. He has already opened a coal and firewood depot on Air Billson’s premises.
