SOCIAL WELFARE.

ANNUAL GUILD MEETING. The first annual meeting of the Social Welfare Guild was held yesterday afternoon in the Poultry Chib rooms, the president, Mrs H. F. Herbert, being in the chair. About twenty members attended. The annual report stated that, being a new organisation, the guild had done remarkably well to have accomplished so much. They had started in the winter without funds, and with dozens nf families in distress, so the task had not been an easy one- During the year the guild had endeavoured wherever possible to put persons in iK>sitions to help themselves, and not to be always dependent on charity. Many families, after being heartened up and shown a way to help themselves, were Txow doing quite well without any help. Others who had been helped through a time of distress were now working hard to help others. The guild had assisted spnie families into tho country, work being found for them. During the year quite a number of young people had become interested in the work, and many of them were now visiting the Hospital and other institutions, and had arranged many pleasant afternoons for the sick and helpless. A Young People’s Guild had been formed at the Technical College by Mias Wilkie, and die girls were devoting one ovening a week to the work. At Christmas time the guild had supplied 100 families with a joint of meat, green peas, new potatoes, cake and other things. Thanks were tendered to the New Zealand Refrigerating Company for meat supplied on five different occasions. Members of the guild had made up aprons, bed jacket®, etc., for the old people in the Jubilee Home, and the Christmas gifts were very much appreciated. At Christmas time five cases of books were sont 4 to th© Tuarangi Home. Ashbnrton. The old men were now provided with a library which the guild hoped t-o add to. Most of the collecting of money had been done by Mesdames Bartlett and Edmonds, to whom thanks were due Messrs Eagleton and Ooesins should be thanked, too. for help given. The New Brighton committee had rendered good assistance, and had collected £3O as the result of a Jumble sale. Potatoes and vegetables were given during the year by Messrs Judd. Cullen, Walter and Winner, and these had been a great help to those in need. The report dealt with the money-raising efforts during the year, and concluded that the gratitude of many of those who had been assisted had been freely expressed, and many husbands, wives and old people had come to members for friendly advice and help in their troubles. The balance-sheet showed that receipts during the year amounted to £43*2 18s sd. and expenditure £257 Gs lid. The total nrofit-j from bazaars were £199 17s lOd.
