FORGED CERTIFICATE.

WITHERS IN COURT. SENTENCE DEFERRED. Mr C. 8. Thomas, who appeared in the Supreme Court to-day for William Withers, convicted of forging an engineer’s certificate twenty years ago, asked his Honor Mr Justice Adams to admit the prisoner to probation. Mr Thomas said Withers always had led a respectable life. He had brought up a family. He was only a labouring man, with an intellect that was not very keen. His Honor said that the forgery was an obvious one. He was surprised that it had passed. Th© offence was a serious one, as the lives of other persons were endangered by an incompetent person holding a certificate for engine-driving under tlie Inspection of Machinery Act. He would like to see the report of the probation officer on the case- He would defer sentence until he had done so. and he would he actuated largely by the report. Withers was admitted to bail again.
