VICTORIA LEAGUE.

EFFORT FOR THE BLIND. The energetic organising committee of the Victoria League, to whose efforts the very successful and attractive fair held yesterday in Cathedral Spun re is due, deserve a word of grateful acknowledgement from the public, who were thus, without trouble to themselves, enabled to show their practical sympathy with the saddest of all afflictions. It so often falls upon the same shoulders, the same ladies come forward year after 3*ear* the same men give weeks of hard work, often sacrificing their scant leisure to do so, in the cause of their less fortunate fellow citizens. And their unselfish work is taken quite lor granted, quite a.s a matter of course. Jt>ach individual who buys a badge, or a cake, or .-ome flowers, considers that be has done a leall.y praiseworthy action.. And so very likely lie his, ior the appeals io our generosity arc fairly frequent Hut what of the worker who leaves home at eight in tho morning and stands four hours at a stretch at a cold street corner, until her lingers are almost too numb to hold her collecting box, and she looks blue with cold? Or of tliO'ie and others also who stand for hours in draughty tents? To these certainly are due the thanks and gratitude of the community. The various stalls were attractively set out and lavishly funnelled. Flowers, cakes, produce and fancy articles ha\ing’ been sent in in abundance. The loilowing ladies were in charge:— Flower -tall —Mrs W. Brown, and helping her, Mrs Whitaker, Mrs Tasker, Mrs Leaver, Miss Manning, Miss Brown and Miss Thompson. This stall had .some really lovely pots of cineraria, besides ,pot plants of lovely winter flowering bulbs. Sweet stall, in charge of Mrs H. H. Smith, Mrs MacDonald and Mrs Kelley, and with them Mrs Wagstaffe, Mrs Climie, Miss Rosewarne and Mr Desmond Parker, who proved himself an invaluable help to everyone. Variety Stall.—Miss McOwen in charge, with Miss Eileen Wilson, Miss Cuthbert, Miss Bowring, Miss Mcßeth, and Miss Mac assisting her. Quantities of gifts from city Arms and from private individuals had been sent in to fill this tempting-looking stall. Cake Stall.—Mrs Thacker, and with .her Mrs Theo -Barker. Mrs Beadei, Mrs Raphael, Mias Inman, Miss Wilson, Mias Heyward, Mrs B. Anderson, Mrs Fleming and Mrs Bloxain. Produce Stall.—-Miss Overton, and with her Mrs Acland, Mrs Bean, Mesdames Chilton, H. J. Hall, George Hammer, Wester. Mis-s Bloxam and Mias Eidredge, Mr Wilda Fox, and Mr Collins rendered yeoman service in distributing the meat, all drumring the end of the tent allocated to a. butcher's shop. There looked to be enough supplies in this stall to furnish most of the households north of the square. Mrs Batchelor and Mrs Evans were in charge of the competitions, and were doing excellent work. Poultry and hams were presided oyer by Bister MdMartin and Boy Scouts, who were selling tickets to each passerby. In fact, in spite of the wet afternoon, the stalls all appeared to be doing excellent business.
