On Tuesday atoning, a good nttendu snoc of members of the Selwyn Nursing Division of tho St Juhn Ambulance Assmiation gathered in the Brigade Rooms. the lady 3:uperintendent being in charge. Five new members were proposed. A portion of the evening was given over to First Aid tests and on the arrival of the divisional surgeon the work was inspected. A very interesting lecture was then given on appendicitis and the causes and symptoms were carefully explained. The opening of Mon Desir Jazz Club took place last evening at the Winter Garden, an enjoyable evening being spent by all those present. The chap»erones were Mesdames Joseph Hamlet, 11. Grange and J. Mrs W. J. Jenkins, of Weddington. in spending a. few days with Mrs D. Miller at New Brighton. Miss I. M. Fife, M.A.. Garden Road, Fendslton, arrived by the Marsroa yesterday morning from Auckland. A very enjoyable evening was given in the “'est Oxford Hall by Mr and lurs J. M’Grnth, “Spring Creek," Oxford, in honour of their oldest son. Eric’s twenty—first birthday. The hall was tastefully decorated with bush evergreens and mauve and yellow streamers and yellow chrysanthemume. A dainty supper was served, during which the usual toast was proposed by hlr August l‘vleyers, to which Mr ErL~ M’Grath suitably responded. Dancing was indulged in, about sixty couples taking part. The music was supplied by Miss Puget, extras being played by Mrs Southgate and Nlisses Skurr and Davis. The New Brighton Fire Brigade held a. very enjoyable dance on “'cdnesday evening in the Pier Hall. The dance room was tastefully decorated in yel—low and black. Llusic was supplied by members of the New Brighton Band and extras were played by Messrs Bailey and Hall. Over eighty parents were present, most of whom were in “ hard—up ” costume. The very enjoyable evening of games, musical items, etc, will not soon be forgotten by those present. A feature of the evening was the supper of snveloys and bread. The best “ hardup " lady was Mrs Eyre and the best “ hard‘np" man was Mr Taylor. Mrs Gibson won the peanut competition, and, Mr Sturrork won the blindfold competition, Mrs H. F. Herbert presented the prizes. The committee announced that arrangements were well in hand for the children’s fancy dress party, to be held in the kindergarten on June 3- The evening was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” .
