EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tlie Canterbury Education Board met today: present—Messrs G. W. Armitag-a (chairman), W. A. Banks, IF. .1. Bignell, ,T. Maze. «T. (low. J. Jamieson, S. Thompson, A. Pevcrill, T. Hughes, W. P. Spencer and the Hon ,T. Grimmond. CORRESPONDENCE. On the motion of Mr C. S. Thompson it was decided to make a grant of £lO 10s to the Workers’ Educational Association. Air Thompson said the association was doing great work, and was really an allied association to the board. The matter was referred to tlie various committees for consideration. The vice-president and honorary secretary of the Society for Imperial Culture applied to the board for its sympathy and approval of the purposes of the society. The chairman explained that tho society stood for art and all things relating to the Empire. tt- had a most magnificent object. On the motion of the chairman, the board passed a resolution expressing its

sympathy with the objects of the society. Tho Belfast School Committee suggested that the hoard should acquire an option over live acres of land offered by Messrs Nicholls Bros. Jt was resolved to reply that the board did not consider the time, opportune for the proposal. The Department stated that it would provide half cost up to £2OO for one acre to extend the Papanui school site. The letter was referred to the School Committee. Correspondence was received regarding the extension of the Richmond school site. In view of the discrepancy between the cost of the land and the amount available from the Department and committee, it was resolved to ask the committee to endeavour to effect some compromise with Mr Kington. The Minister wrote agreeing to make an additional grant of £350 for the land recently acquired for tlie Shirley school. The committee agreed to inform the School Committee, and t.o ask them for a report and information at once, as the matter was urgent and of great importaj ce to the district. Tlie report was adopted. NORMAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The Normal School- Committee reported that a request was submitted from the pupils ot' the secondary department, with the unanimous agreement of the parents concerned, asking permission to employ not more than ten minutes each day in the repetition of the Lord's Prayer and tlu> reading* of a passage of Scripture. The proposal was approved provided it was carried out in accordance with the board's by-laws. A telegram was received from the Department. approving of the appointment of Air It. S. The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee reported as follows : A letter was received from tlie secretary ot the Education Boards’ Association suggesting that representations be made to tlie Department regarding the inadequacy ol tlie administration grant. It was resolved to express the opinion that the grant mentioned bad not been found sufficient but that such was not the case in connection with the buildings maintenance grant.
