RUGBY FOOTBALL. Last Saturday the secondary school teams playing in the Rugby Union's competition did not faro so well as usual. The Technical College team in the fifth grad© wa3 by i*.o means a strong proposition last week and went down before tho attack of Mariot Brothers by 28-€. Tho winning team bad all the best of tho play and deserved to have won by a larger margin. Referee: Mr t D. Friedlander. Y„M.C.A. in the same grade were defeated by Merivale by li nil after a fairly even game in which both teams did their share of attacking. Cant, Rogers and Rhodes scored tries for the winners. Rhodes converted one try. llefrreey Mr P. C'. Jones Riccarton showed inijfFoved form in theit game against Kaiapoi and eventually carried off the victory by 6-nil. The game, however, was closely contested, both sides showing good form, particularly in tho rear division. Referee: Mr W. Templeton. Sydenham -Lyttelton ran all . over Linwood. the final score being 51-nil in favour of the Port team. Browne (5). Murchison (3), Skelton (2). Knowles (2), Bright, Shaw and Shearin scored tries, three of which were converted by Bright. Referee: Mr T. Only two games were played in the sixth grade, st Peter's defaulting to Mari at Brothers. The latter not yet lost a match and should fight the final out with the A team for Technical College Merivale were too good for Technical College B and won by 2*2-3. The star performer for Merivale was W. Oliver, who potted two goals in addition to scoring on© try and converting another. Oliver has hern playing Aery well in primary school games, where he is the mainstay of the Waltham team. Watson. Taylor and Brown also scored tries for Merivale. whilst F. Davison got across for Technical. Referee: Mr F. O. Schmidt. Technical College A were again victorious on Saturday, putting it across Y.M.C.A. hy 70-nil. Billons <5 . Stiver ‘4b Marshall (3). Murphy (3). Bates (2) and Judkins scored trie? for the winners. Stiver Marshall (3;. Billens and Murphy converted tries. Despite the large total run up against them. Y.M.C.A. put up a very plucky fight against an older and heavier team. J. Dawson played a very good gan>f» for the Blues, whilst the handling on the part of Technical was nowhere as good as it should have been. They will have improve if they are to win the competition in this grade. Referee: Mr F>. Ha sell. The new rule, forbidding the kick into touch except from the defenders' own twenty-five, caused a little confusion last Saturday, but on the whole most of tho teams appeared to have mastered it properly and undoubtedly it tended to inak» the game much faster.

Waltham defeated Woolston at Lancaster Turk hy 10 points to 6. For the winner .- Oliver kicked a penalty goal and dropkicked a goal and Kerr scored a try. For Woolston. Lilburne kicked a. penalty goal and Thompson scored a try. Mr C. Allarwas referee. Tho game was a good exposition of fast, open football. Woolston were, much superior in .the first spell and led 6-0. The forwards played with dash and combination. Oliver and Kerr (hacks) were the best. Lilburne played a great game at first five-eighths for Woolston. and Murray stood out in a good pack of forward*. Waltham asserted their superiority in the second spell. The forwards infused much more dash into their play, while the backs effected some splendid passing rushes. Oliver drop-kicked a fine goal. For tlm winners Newton. Bayliss and May in ihc forward?. LIGHT-WEIGHT GRADE. Waltham 20 defeated Sydenham B 0. (. ha Stoll (3), Murray, Sibley and Grenfell reored and Sibley converted one. The gnmc was patchy, although the winners gave glimpses of good combined rushes in Loth forwards ami bucks. Sydenham battled hard.
