NEW PLAGUE SERUM.

\ EXCELLENT RESULTS. (Per Press Association.) * WELLINGTON, May 17, i Last month the Minister of Health, * the Hon O. J. Parr, observed in a > summary of information which he rei ceived from Australia that remarkable 5 results had attended the use of a new plague serum in Sydney. There had b been only one death out of thirteen l patients in New- South Wales, which Mas much lower than the plague death rate in Queensland. Further infor- ' mation was sought. The Minister . has now received some particulars from 1 *ho Director-General of Health at Sydney, Dr Armstrong. The serum was ! the discovery of Dr Burton Bradley, in the Bacteriological Institute of Aus- * tralia and has been used extensively in Sydney with results which Dr Armstrong considers to be excellent. Of . twenty-two patients treated eighteen recovered from plague with expedition, and the three who died never had a chance. One came under the serum treatment five days after the beginning of his illness, one was moribund on admission to the hospital and one M r as 83 years of age. In every ordinary case it would appear that tho serum has been effective. As the results appear so remarkable the Health Department, on the instruction of tho Minister, is making further investigations.
