DRAINAGE BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. Tho Christchurch Drainage Board met last evening; present—Messrs H. J- °JL\v 1 (deputy-chairman), H. Holland, J-. Bur- ; goyne, S. 0. Bingham, W. J. Waiter. J. W. i Beanland and F. Storey. Leave oi absence was granted to the chairman (Mr W. rlili), and Messrs S. A. Staples and J. Down. The engineer (Mr James Cullens) reported that the two chains of timbering authorised for Kruse's drain at the intersection of North Road and Northcqte Road, had been completed; that the bridge over the outfall drain, in Hartnell’s property (between Rargood's and St Johns Roads). Woolston, had collapsed and required renewing, at. an estimated cost of £l2; that levels taken on the Canal Reserve drain showed it would be possible to place an invert therein at a suitable grad© without lowering tho drain throughout its length, and also lowering the culvert at Hay Street. The portion of the drain above Hay Street was on an unformed surveyed road line, and it would be inadvisable :o construct, any permanent works for storm water until such time as the road was formed. The report was adopted. Dr J. J\ Frengley, Deputy-Director-(ten-oral of Health, forwarded (a) an extract from the New Zealand "Gazette” setting out the regulations made for the appointment to the Plumbers’ Board of New Zealand of a person holding the position of engineer to a borough council or Drainage Board; (b) a list arranged in order of population of the cities and boroughs having over 6000 inhabitants, prepared from returns furnished by the Government Statistician in accordance with the census of April, 1921; and (c) a notice requesting the board to nominate an engineer member of tho Plumbers' Board of New Zealand. Mr James Cullens, the hoard's engineer, was nominated for the position. The Canterbury Rowing Association wrote stating that it its last meeting reference was made to the very excellent state of the river during the past season, and thanking the board for the work it | had done in this respect The association 1 specially appreciated tho fact that the I water had been maintained at such a high level, and trusted the same plan would he ! followed this year of not letting it, away I on the lower reaches, as a good depth < f I water was a great boon to the oarsmen, j The letter was received. | The St Albans School Committee notified i that, owing to its financial position it was I unable to contribute the sum of £SO re I ciuired bv the hoard towards timbering tho St Albans Creek through the school grounds. The letter was received. The City Surveyor applied for permission to construct a footbridge at the entrance to Linwood Park over the out surface drain, in a lino with the north-western side of Randolph Street. The application was granted. Hr T Tomlinson. the board s chief inspector, reported on the Woolston trade effluents. He stated that only one firm had failed to take any steps to erect efficient Fettling pits. The secretary stated that since the report had been prepared firm^referrei ter. after having received notice that un less they did so their connection with the river would he cut off. Accounts amounting to £1324 19s were passed for payment. The hoard went into committee to couth© nroposed Christchurch Drainage Act Amendment Bill.
