The Tlon G. -7. Anderson arrived from Wellington this morning. ITe will go south to-morrow. Mr Thomas Gee, who is leaving for the Old Country to-day, resigned his seat on the Canterbury Land Board. Mr Geo was appointed to represent the Government on the board. A Dunedin telegram announces the death of Mr T. W. Whitson, who was [or many years secretary of the Union Steam Ship Company. He was in his seventy-sixth year. Mr If. P. Dobbs, who has been country representative for Messrs Gordon md Gotch for the past ten years, has severed his connection with the firm to 20 into business on his own account in ;he city. By last mail news was received from jrenoble (France) that Mr Cecil Malhus, M.A , holder of the New Zealand University French war travelling ;cholarship, had been successful in passng with honourable mention the Di>loma de Hautes E’tudes of the Uni'ersity of Grenoble. Malthus expects to leave for New Zealand about the beginning of July. Mr W. G. Morrison, who has been appointed Forest Extension Officer for the South Inland, has taken up his duties, and is now visiting various parts of the country. During this week he j has been getting into touch with pub- I lie bodies and private individuals in and around Christchurch in connection with tree planting, and ho will go on to Ashburton to-morrow. Fast evening there was a large gathering at the Edge ware Road Methodist Church when a cordial welcome was extended to the Rov T. H. Burton. The Rev J. Napier Milne presided. A. pleasant little ceremony took place at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association last evening, when Colonel R. Young. Officer Commanding the restrict, pro sented the Farrell Memorial Cup to f Mr F. G- Walker for obtaining the 1 highest score secured by a returned soldier at the army rifle meeting held at Redoliffs last week. Colonel Young said that fifteen returned soldiers took part in the competition, and Mr W'alkcr;s score was 102 points, the next best score being 94 points. The returned ' soldiers team had put up a great re- I curd at the meeting, having obtained a score of 504 points, the best Territona'l I score having been 379 points. He hoped 1 next year to see a much larger number f ol returned soldiers taking part in tbe M meeting. I •
