LOCAL AND GENERAL.
NEWS FROM NEAR AND FAR A serious allegation has been made against a Wellington Third B cricket team—namely, that it played a man under an assumed name. At a. meeting of the ssociation the chairman (Air C. G. Wilson) was not sparing in his comments. Addressing the captain, he said : “ This is the first time during my many years* connection with the game that I have heard of such a thing being done, and I’m rather surprised T take this opportunity (addressing the captain) of impressing on you the- fact that actions such as these discredit what is recognised as one of the finest games throughout the world. You have only to think of the discredit vou bring to all clubs by such actions. I want to see you play the game in good spirit.” The meeting deferred its decision on the matter, and instructed the player against whom the complaint was made to attend the next meeting of the association, and explain his conduct. Recently a member of a cricket club whose team was playing at Wellington College grounds wilfully, so it is alleged, damaged tho college pavilion. The captain and secretary of the team were called before the committee of the association to explain tho incident. The captain said he was acting as umpire at the time. He asked the man to desist, but his authority had not been recognised. The chairman (Mr C. G. Wilson) said that this sort of thing had to be. stopped. Another member of the committee said that the association had very valuable x>rivileges. and that foolish actions such as the one under review were likely to do the- association a great deal of harm. The club’s explanation was accepted,-and the secretary of the club was directed to write t-o the principal of the college expressing regret for the occurrence, and enclosing an amount sufficient to cover the damage.
