RIFLE SHOOTING.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. (Per Press Association.) GREYTOWN, February 26. The shooting opened this morning with the fifteen shots Canterbury Match at 600 yards. At the start it was drizzling, but the wind was very light, and steady. Fifteen shots at any time try the men out. and the first ones down to-day were fully tested, the rain affecting elevation. Some good scores were registered nevertheless. although there were some bad failures. The later men had the advantage of finer weather, but this was counteracted by a freshening breeze from the left with rapid alternations of bright sunlight and deep shade as the clouds drove across the range. The best scores in the match so far are —Nielson (Napier). 74. This was a fine effort, one off the possible, with eleven successive bulls to finish with. Roots (Hawgra) equalled the score, but dropped his point at the tenth shot: so Nielson counts him out. Young (Upper Hutt) got on “ hard luck,” 73. getting ten bulls from the etart and then two inners. high and low. and finishing with hulls. Bcholes '(Upper Hutt). 72; two shots off the bull were “ magpie.” high and low. Other good cards to date are:—H. Loveday 72, Croxton. Guiney. Swaysland. Marenzi, West, and Guy. each 70. Guy had a hard fight against the bright sunlight, followed by a sharp shower, but he never got out of the inner circle. At present he is leading with an aggregate of 306. which carries with it a- prize of £l6 and the Carbine Cup. Roots and West follow with 303 each, and are not likely to he displaced. Guy takes the Buchanan Challenge Cup and gold for the highest aggregate of 163 out of a possible 175 at the 600yds ranges fired to date. The first long-range shoot of the meeting. ten shots at 800yds. is in progress this afternoon. Bright sunlight after the damp morning brought out a mirage running •across the face of the targets from the left, but the scoring is very good.
