! EVENTS OF THE WEEK, £Fbom Orn Ooa*.ESBONDBN‘T,3 BOROUGH PICNIC. Jf Next Wednesday the combined borough and school picnic Trill be held at. the Riccarton Racecourse. Special trams will concentrate at the pier bead, leaving about 9 a.m.. and resuming at 6 p.m. Shopkeepers nrd others have been asked to declare a whole holiday. The School Committee have arrangements well in hand, and bare received a large number of donations towards the prize fund. TAUTER - BOROUGH CONTESTS. Mr W. R. Cooke, who has taken a keen interest in the inauguration of the inter-borough contests, has been in communication with enthusiasts at Sumner during the week. Mr Allen has arranged a meeting next week, aucl as a result it is hoped something definite will eventuate. New Brighton sports bodies are asked to keep the matter in mind, and attend the combined meeting as soon a a it is announced. PERSONAL. E>r Glasgow, who recently underwent an operation for appendicitis, is now convalescent. He esjiects to leave for Auckland for a short holiday. Mrs M’Pherson, a very old and respected resident of the Ellesmere district. and who has lately resided in Lonsdale Street, New Brighton, passed away last week, after a long illness. The interment took place at Lees ton. SCHOOL AFFAIRS. A very important feature affecting the work and administration of the school at New Brighton, has just been revealed. For the year ending 1921 j 503 pupils wore admitted, while 441 I pupils left. One romantic youth seemed very much downhearted as he hummed “ Heart bowed down ” on Tiis way home from the meeting. BEACH MOTOR RACES. Judging by the attendance these races have come to stay, so residents are. seeking the assistance of the police to stop the speed-fiend in his macT rush to and from the races. LUCERNE COMMITTEE. Mr A. M’Pherson, the lucerne expert, advisee that a start should be made now with plants of the Grims variety. American experience proven that plants do better than seed. Mr Whatman has always done battle for this lucerne patch in the domain, and he now feels that the Brighton municipal farm is about to take shape, and is already in sight. THE TREE PLANTING. A few years ago the Borough Council planted a belt of trees on the seaward side of the tramline. The pandrlrift soon put a set on most of them, but about half a dozen stood the storm, are dome** well and now stand six feet high. A further plant could cow be made with safety. We all know the visitors come to enjoy the shade as well as the sunshine. THE M.P. LOOKS IN. Our member, Mr W. D Sullivan, paid a surprise visit. We walked him round and discussed drainage matters, showed him how we settle rat, flea «nd fly problems. Afterwards ne took him up on to the highest pinnacle, where he could view the sea i and the city from the roof gardens of the New Ozone Palace. He expressed surprise and wonderment at all he saw and said the new block of brick buildings was an eye-opener Finally tea I was served in the Ozone and Mr Suij hvnn again proved himself “ a very ; energetic member.'’
