The Christchurch Drainage Board met last night. Present Messrs Walter Hill (chairman), H. J. Otley, F. Burgoyne, J. W. Beanland. C. Hill. F. Storey, H. Holland. S. C. Bingham and W. J. Walter. Messrs Helmore and van Ascii wrote asking the board to construct a sewer in Heltnore’s Road from the Rhodes Street extension to Holmwood Road, at the expense of the owners The offer was made unconditionally, but it was suggested that when the extended scheme of sewerage was undertaken the question of refund should he considered. Mr Otley said that the work had been completed and the whole question was whether the latter part of the request | should be considered. Mr Beanland 6aid that those concerned j should not escape the extra rate that ; would be chargeable when the whole of the j extended area was taken in. The chairman said that at first blush j it looked as if no loan would he necessary j so long as everybody constructed their > own drains, as in the present case, hut | the existing mains and headworks would eventually have to be extended, and the l hoard always had the power to vary the j rate for those in the new extension, who were liable for the extra rate. The board approved of the carrying out ; of the work subject to the conditions men- • tioned by the chairman. The Waimari County Council wrote re- ! questing the hoard to pipe a drain on North Road to the Council Chambers with 18-inch pipes. Tt wa-s resolved (hat nothing less than 2ft 6in pipes should he permitted. It was agreed to obtain a report on the proposal to take over the Pereival Street The “ Lyttelton Times ” was appointed the official paper for current year. In connection with the request of the New Brighton Borough Council (hat the board should raise the heierhr of the re- 1 taining wall near the bridge and extend it to prevent flooding, it was resolved to ask the council to submit an estimate of the necessary expenditure and undertake to collect a rate to cover the oost.
