Mr Ct I>. Greenwood is the biggest stake winner in the Dominion, so far as the present season has gone. Nine of his horses have earned money, as folImvs: —Pluto £2OIB, Gloaming £1695, l'arceur £I6OO, Vespucci £IOOO, Tres-.-Hivr £320, Veil £2OO, Egotism £l5O, fkipidon £l6O, Valdame £4O; total £7070. In addition there is the big nm won in Australia in the spring, chiefly made up by Oupidon’s Derby success. Sir George Clifford's horses hare -won JL6562 this season, with a prospect that the total will be substantially increased during the next few months. Winning Hit has earned £3840, other contributors being Scrimmage £1430, Whipping Boy £2BO, Counterstroke £270, Purple Spur £237, Triermain £225, Brave Deed £l5O, Dame Straitlace £llO, Angelo £2O. Pr.lestrina claims onlv cno engagement at Trentham—the Wellington Cup. • V S. Walls will ride Mustard Pot in his Trentham engagements. Walls is a capable jirid vigorous horseman, who lias already several victories to his credit on Mr Starky’s smart galloper' including the two races lie won-at the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Egotism, who is favourite for the Wellington Cup, has been a prime fancy for several important handicaps, but she has proved consistently expensive to her admirers. She is, in fact, still eligible for hack company. J. O’Shea is riding well in the North Island this season. Ho had two mounts at the Rotorua meeting and he won each time. It is elated that A. Reed has been engaged to ride Egotism in the Wellington Cup, so that Mr Greenwood’s mare will lose nothing in the matter of horsemanship. Ilaceful showed attractive form at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, and he may get some mere money at Irentham. Rouen must be a very liaidy customer. He has had a busy seuson, but hi? admirers are confident that lie will race well at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. The withdrawal of Malaga from the Wellington Chip left the successful North Island apprentice, A. Dixon, without a ride, but be has since heen engaged to pilot Esperance. K. Hawkins, a Tasmanian jockey, who has been riding work lately at Irentham. has been granted a license, and he will probably get his share of mounts at the Wellington Racing Club’s meetisg. Hector Gray, after a farewell visit to his relatives in Taranaki last week, vent on to Auckland to join the Makura, which left for Vancouver yesterday. His original intention was to remain in the Dominion until February 7, but in response to a cable from England from Sir Cunliff© Owen, for whom he rode so successfully last season, and who has oonsiderablv augmented his team, he decided to hasten his departure. Gray expects to arrive in Eng%nd on February 20 f in ample time to ft himself for the opening of the new racing season in March. * * At the .summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club a rider was heavily fined for taking his wrong place at the barrier, and this, it was thought, would have acted as a deterrent. The occurrence, however, was evidently soon forgottpn, for at the Rotorua meeting last week, one youngster, who drew an inside position was hustled out to the extreme outside. and nobody took any notice. According to a northern writer, it was a bad care, and should not. have been overlooked.

The free-legged pacer, Don Wild, who was brought hero in the spring from Australia and won a race at Addington in November, was subsequently purchased by the Kiccarton trainer, A. Fleming. H«* won for his new owner at New Brighton, but failed to pace smoothly at Canterbury Parle this month. The horse has since changed hands again, havisg been sold to Miss N. Gunn, the owner of General LinkA few weeks ago Mr A. Finlayson disposed of the pacer Mako Mako to Mr R.. J- Stone, hut there was an argument between the parties over the deal and the horse has heen sold back to Mr Finlayson. Although the West Coast owner V. Alborn, is not so actively engaged m the trotting sport ns formerly, he finds time to produce a few winners During the Weet Coast meetings at Christmas and New Year time he won three races with Apres Mol, all oil the Reefton course, where he now trains his horses. . The American bred horse Ballm has heen raced at both gaits, and has proved successful at trotting and pacing. He has won three races this season, and has been placed a similar number of times. The pacer Ben Wallace, who does all his racing on Auckland tracks, has raced unluckily so far this season as he has been twice second and three times in third place. • # <V The pacer Oapriqcio has not y*ct won a race this season, but she has earned £535 in place money. The trotter Dfllon S. raced unluckily during the West Coast meetings, as he was in second place on five occasions without scoring a win. His winnings amounted to £92. a hTe pacer Crusader was three times in second' place, and once third before lie won a race on tile W est Coast circuit On each day of the Reefton Jockey Club’s meeting he was placed twice, whilst he was successful at the Inangahua Trotting Club’s meeting, which is held on the Reefton Jockey Club’s course. Tire trotter Proud Ata showed some improvement when worked at Addipgton, and lie raced well on the West Onast circuit, winning three races and finishing third twice. His winnings were £243.

HAWKE’S BAY NOTES.

(Special to the il Star.’ ) NAPIER, January 17,. Roy Reid, whose suspension expired a couple of weeks ago, was not long * n getting into his stride with regard to riding winners. He had the mount on

Truthful when she won the Rotorua Cup, and he scored three wins at the Wairoa (Hawke’s Bay) meeting to-day. It is worthy of not© that Reed s suspension of three months was for interfering with Truthful during the running of a race at Hastings in Octoberlast, and Truthful was the first animal he rode to victory after his term of suspension had expired. Starter A. G. Wood had sufficiently recovered from his recent severe indisposition to start the fields at Wairoa to-day. It is reported that Battle Knight has been sold to a Hawke’s Bar sportsman, who intends shortly hnving him put in work, with a view to winter racing. Th<i Cvpher is to bo shipped from Wellington to Sydney on Wednesday, in charge of E. Wilson, brother of his lato trainer, Duke Wilson. It is understood that efforts wero made to secure H. Gray’s services for the rido on Morose in the Fitzherbert Handicap at Wellington, but as Gray will be leaving almost immediately oil his return to the Old Country, he had to decline. Possibly Roy Reed may bo seen in the saddle on Morose. Rente may lie sent north for the Takapuna Cup, though nothing has been decided yet.

SOUTHLAND NOTES.

(Special to the “Star. ’) INVERCARGILL, January 17. The Riverton Racing Club has decided to Wold over a number of improvements which were contemplated, with a view of keeping up the value of stakes to owners at a time of financial stress. The stakes for the club’s Easter fixture are to be increased, with the result that £3750 will be available for disribuion. The Otiwtai Steeplechase, a novice stake, is to be done away with, and two county events will also be dropped, which will gi\e three additional hack races for the coming fixture. The question of reinstating hurdle races was considered, but it was decided to take .no action in the meantime. The pacer Royal Step struck himself in a work-out last week, and he has been eased up. It is hardly likely that lie will be a starter at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s summer meeting. The imported mare who has not been raced for some time past, has been in retirement, suffering from a cold. It is reported that Mr Chisholm's handsome racer has recovered, and it i 3 expected that she will be produced at the Dunedin Cup gathering. The steeplechaser Palladio and S:l----verspire have joined W. Robinson’s string in Invercargill, to be prepared for fall and winter racing. The former has an unsightly leg, as the outcome of an operation, but he canters soundly and is looking well. Silver spire has been exercised in harness in his owner’s gig during the off season, and has apparently done well on this treatment.

The construction of the local winter track has been resumed since the Southland Racing Club’s summer fixture was disposed of. It is expected to have thi track ready for autumn use.

The veteran gelding Gunrest has been taken up after a spell and will in future be trained by R. Bromby in Invercargill. Light harness trainer W. H. Muir is still suffering severely from his fractured arm, and it will be some time before the victim of a motor-car cranking accident can resume duty. In more than one instance of late years clubs in the south have inflicted a universal charge on racegoers—on© charge for rich and poor alike of 7s 6d per day, with only one enclosure in use. The practice of curtailing the charge for admission iji favour of the man well able to pay for his sport, to the financial oppression of humbler patrons, is attracting adverse criticism from well-wishers of the turf. A is quoted where members of a club holding a two-dav totnlisator permit pay 10s Gd per annum (including special nrivile ges), as against a twd-dav cost of 15s to casual patrons. During the past week Elens has been tet more exacting tasks than usual, his

working companion being the stallion Burrangong. The latter is thriving on his work, and has quite recovered from the soreness that troubled him a few weeks ago. F. W. Ellis has the remainder of Mr W. Stone’s horses doing well, including Silver Peak, Salerno, Roseday*- and the two-year-old Maytime, by Boniform—Mayhap. May time has not been seriously tried out as yet, but she moves attractively. It is expected that Wild Shot by Calibre from the imported mare Wild Oats, will be schooled for hurdle racing in the near future. He is a fine-looking horse, but refuses to reproduce his track form in public. With Glepshine and Wild Shot in commisson as jumpers, Mr J. Graham should win some valuable races, the former in particular promising to be useful. The two-year-old Warhaven will probably mako his racing debut at the Dunedin Cup fixture in the Hopeful Handicap. The son of Killroney and Rosyth is a very nice youngster, with a sweepng stride that promises to carry him far and fast. The Solferino filly. Francaise, may represent Mr W. T. Hazlett at the Wairio Jockey Club’s meeting on Satur day, and she promises to carry very heavy public support. She is at the top cf her form at present, president of the Southland Racing Club will have three nice mares to carry his colours at the Dunedin Cup fixture in Francaise, Illume and Moulin Rouge, all of whom were bred by their owner. July Spark, a brother to Brackenfield, is another of Mr Hazlett*s home-trained brigade. He suffers from thin-shelled feet, but a course of shoeing treatment by the Wingatui smith. Mr R. M’Donald. has resulted beneficially. Mention of Mr M’Donald’s name recalls to mind the fact that the Wingntui owner-trainer intends taking St Augustus to the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting, and ciuite a number of ]>eoplo here will follow the fortunes of the smart son of Benoform and San Severo. as he displayed attractive fo *t*i when raced in the soutli.

P. T. Hosran’s pupil, Liqueud. also won manv admirers in this part of the world, his form here recommending him for an indentured riders’ event at Trentham.
