A number of spurious half-crowns are in circulation, and the public are warned to examine their change for the detection of these valueless coins, savs the Auckland “ Star.” Several have been passed in hotels and one at least was detected by a tram conductor. The coins are excellent imitations, but rough, worn and dented in the milling, and they will not “ ring.” What is described as a whirlwind struck a couple of properties in St George’s Road, Avondale, Auckland, during the past week. A large fowlhouse, nearly 50 feet long and 16 feet wide, was lifted bodily and deposited in an adjacent section. There were about 600 chickens in the building, hut only a dozen were killed. Some trellis work in an adjoining garden was also blown down and scattered about the yard. The phenomenon appears to have been quite local, as no other properties are reported to have been affected.

There were apparently some lightfingered gentry attending the Woodville races, at least one luckj' investor being a victim (reports an exchange). He had met with good success in his early ventures, and, canny man, thought he would put the bulk of his winnings in a wallet and stow it away in supposed safety m his hip pocket, keeping out “ enough to go on with.” Fortune deserted him. however, and he had to seek recourse in his reservo fund, only to find that it had vanished. The idea that the hip pocket is a safe place for the bestovai of a wad of notes is a fond delusion, for that particular receptacle is said ta provide the “ dipper ” with better facilities than any other. A GOOD START. Quite the best start for the New Year for housewives is to buy Woodward’s (late Campbell Bros.’) Famous Crown Brand Bread. It’s the loaf with a flavour all of its own. Users of Woodward’s Bread will tell you of its value. You try it. All grocers sell it. Bakery: 186, Antigua Street. ’Phono 1529. 2218
