CLABH INC OATES, Having got through their holiday ©n~ ! gagementa, inmates ol local stable*, j galloping and trotting, wifi have an j easy time for a. week or two, after ; which they trill hare another round of > meetings to attract the attention of their owners. A few horses from this | quarter will l»e racing at the meetings of the Wellington Racing Club and } Wellington Trotting Club, but most of | them will be reserved until next month, when Riccarton and Addington will once more draw local sportsmen, while j on the same dates there will be trolling and galloping fixtures in "Dunedin. The clashing of dates between Christchurch and Dunedin olub3 was recently 1 referred to by “Sentinel,” of the Otago Witness,** as follows - 1 ‘ The Forbury Park Trotting Club lias again decided to race on tbe Saturday and Monday preceding the Dunedin Cup meeting. This means that the Canterbury trotting men who com© south v ill again clear out in order to participate in the Addington meeting, dated for February 12 (the concluding day of »h© Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting). Under these circumstances our Carnival Week will neior grow' inLt> the racing importance that would be- possible ll the Forburv and Wingatui fixtures were dovetailed. Then again the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Midsummer meeting takes pitted on February 5 and unless some action is taken in tb* matter the racing mid trotting meetings taking place in Christchurch will form a serious drawback to the meetings held on the same dates in Dunedin feurely the brotherhood of sportsmanship would permit a more satisfactory arrangement of dates. The writer has pointed out this unsatisfactory slate of affairs on previous occasions, but the clubs most concerned seem to overlook the matter and so considerably discount the prospect* of success at their own meetings.” Thole can bo no doubt that the present ram; run cut of dates unsatisfactory, and the two Dunedin dubs are the chief sufferers, for the reason that their meetings arc dependent on the support of visiting horses, including those from Canterbury stables, whereas tho Christchurch fixtures can bo successfully run with only local performers to provide the ftdde A point that be overlooked, however, in that the two southern .jdubs are responsible foT the clash. Until quite recently tho Forbury Park Trotting Club held its meeting at the end of January, while the Dunedin Jockey Club raced in the third week in February. When it was tdougbt advisable that they should ra.ee about tho same time, the dates of boll, meetings were shifted, bringing about tbe present unsatisfactory arrangement. Tbe Canterbury Jockey Club and tho Metropolitan Trotting Club have had their present dates, at the beginning of February , for many years, and the two Dunedin dubs could avoid the unfci tun-ite clash very easily, bv reverting to the dates winch tho Dunedin •Jockey Club previou-lv held. It is very* doubtful if the trotter Red Heath# will survive another preparation. Me went wrong behind eorpe time ago and after « good spell he was put into work again. He has now broken* down in one ot his front lcgiLx has m hand a very promising throe-vear-o!d trotting gelding by Nelson Bingen from that fine trotter Bellflower- The youngster was pur chased bv a patron of Cox's stable for . -ood figure. The young trotter will he "prepared for the Sew Zealand Trotting Suhcs.

The pacer Vice-Admiral has not yet iv on a race the* but ho has earned .£1043 In pla ,e money.

R. J. Mason is expected to arrive at Trcntham with his team in a day or two. He has Egotism., Pluto and Vespucci in tbe AVelljugton Cup. Tho Australian horseman. A. Orrcll. who has been riding in the Dominion for several months, intends to return to the Commonwealth shortly. "While schooling at Ellerslie on Saturday morning, the King Mark gelding Den Bolt fell, and - breaking one of his legs, he had to be destroyed. Ben Boil, who wa* owned by Mr A. V Symes, was viewed in a promising light as a jumper. To celebrate the victory of Winning Hit in tho Great Northern Derby, Sir George Clifford entertained the members of the Press gallery, and the Prime Minister was also present. In a speech fitting to tbe occasion. Mr Massey remarked that he feared there was very little chance of tbe Dower House passing the Gaming Bill promoted by Sir Edwin Mitchelson. Gloaming Is not engaged at the Wellington Racing Club'iT meeting this month. Phi to figure* iti the Wellington Cup and also tti the Telegraph Handicap, to b%« run on tho sumo day. Negotiations are in progress at preent for the sale of tbe Demosthenes gelding Chrysostom. who has not shown any form lately, though he was a sprinter much above the average last season. Despite the falling off of some £50,000 m the totalisator returns at Auckland, the Government . collected increased taxation to the amount of £12,000. Several prominent owners are leaving their teams at Ellerslie until after the Tctkapuna meeting, which will take place at the end of tbe month. These include Messrs W. G. Stead. T. H. Lowrv, the executors of the Douglas Estate and Mr B. L. Joll. Rational was shipped back to New Plymouth alter the Auckland meeting, but he is shortly to arirve at Trentham. where he has an engagement in the Wellington Stakes, to be decided this month. Air A-rohie Wilson, the new stipendiary steward, lias not been long getting into bis stride. He was in attendance at Rannevirk©' and Manawatu, where other officials had charge, and acted on his own at Marten. He challenged the riding of C. Stephens, the Victorian light-weight attached to T. Telford’s Trentham stable. The rider named was suspended for three months. Commenting on the starting on the second day of the ' Southland Racing Club s meeting, the Invercargill writer “Sir Mod red ' had the following:— Profiting by their experiences of the opening day, the horsemen engaged displayed increased confidence in Mr A. D. M’Tvor. the outcome being that the new starter accomplished improved work, getting his fields well away in overv instance. The dispatches in the light harness races were very much better than on the first day. The local starter has adopted a plan which will appeal to owners and trainers of wellbehaved horses, in that he ig prepared to give riders a reasonable amount of latitude in connection with lining up erratic animals, but he wastes no time in placing them in the rear after a fair trial if this idea were general!v adopted people connected with gallopers would devote more time to their education, and everybodv would be as nearly satisfied as possible at the result.
