CORRUPTION CHARGE.

The case in which Alderman Brampton is charged on an information laid by Sir Allen Taylor, that -while a. member of the City Council he corruptly took for himself and other persons unknown, who were also public and ministerial officers, a bribe of £25 in part payment of a larger sum. from George Gill, as an inducement to favour Gill and It. Bead in relation to contracts for taking supplies to the City Council was continued to-da.v. Counsel for the prosecution stated that at a certain stage of the negotiations for contracts a trap that had been laid was discovered. Braiustou withdrew and tiie correspondence was dropped like a hot potato. A letter was submitted outlining n conmiissibn entrusted to Gill by Alfred Burnett, public and consulting investigator of Melbourne, in which frill was retained for the first week at * salary of £25, and Subsequent weeks at £lO 15s, in addition t-o first class travelling and hotel expenses. The letter instructed Gill to ascertain if the allegations that certain members of the council resorted to obtaining money by dishonest methods, such as demanding money from tenderers in connection with the supply of material for municipal works, were true, and he was warned against suggesting to pay for the goodwill of any member of the council, as the suggestion, if made, must come from them. Burnett also wrote that he was employed by Mr W. M Elhone. solicitor of Sydney, from whom Gill would receive further instructions.
