Three days later Lord Randolph proposed, and was accepted. At that time Lady Randolph was amazingly beautiful and the most famous of all the American beauties who hare married : into the British nobility. Added to i which she had very great charm, “ an | extraordinary amount of enerr-v- a i perfect blaze of vitality, an accorri- | plished wit, a.nd a remarkably sound j taste in art.” It used to be said of her | when things were going against Lord j Randolph and she fought for him that “her smile was as powerful as o Cabinet Minister's speech.”
