VOTE OF CONFIDENCE.

MR MASSEY AND AUCKLAND EAST. (Pep. Press Association.) WELLINGTON, November 3. Mr Massev, speaking regarding the Auckland East by-election, said he naturally was gratified Mr Clutha Mackenzie put up a good fight and deserved to win. Mr Massey expected to hear the old storv about a minority victory, but he believed that the result would have been the same had there been only two candidates. He looked upon the fact that three byelections in succession had been victories for Government candidates as a vote of confidence in the Government, and an expression of the country’s intention to support the Government in the very difficult duties which had been forced up them by the existing financial stringency.
